hello everybody how are you ? well.. actually i'm facing weird situation at my story .. here it is : i'm writing by the third person pov , i have nearly nine seperate groups at this stage of my story , each group has four characters at least that they share in making of the events at my story .. it's my thrid novel at my epic , first and second parts and the early writings of the third there were only one group where all the major characters are .. now these characters are devided into so many groups.. i'm publishing my writings online one by one , so i have many readers online , and i have the respond to my writings immediately from them .. if you think a little you'll realize my problem here , my story is high fantasy type , like the triology of the great tolkien , adventure is the main line in my story , and by the way what i write now is the most wonderful writings i have ever made , and my readers feel the same as me , but this isn't the problem .. i believe that one must write what he likes to read , that's why i write by this cray way , that's why i came seeking ur help today .. i'm losing my realtions to my major characters.. that's in brief my current problem .. before there were strong relations with the characters , i can feel them , my readers get attached to whoever they like and feel they are part of their family .. i must confess that by the splitting i'm doing now i can tell many stuff about each character , but this is n't the case , the problem is i want to write so many things about the actions happenning to them , their feelings , thoughts , but simply i can't , if i lose control over this thing i'll write down a new epic , not a part of epic - i mean in size - , i'll fill my story with infodump , with so many things that can be cut , but i need to make my story life again , i can feel the characters moving away , i can't stand that , so i thought about a solution .. and here i came to it .. can i write anew line of story , seperate from my mainline story , something like diary book of my characters ? daily events or something like that ? is this good solution ? or you have any suggestion ? have anyone made such a thing before ? what should i pay attention to when doing such a thing ? i'm thinking , these daily events , which ofcourse will be written in first person pov , will have new people knowing my character , that mean events will be added to the experince of my characters , can i build upon this in my main story line ? or i should not make any interactions between both ? i hope you can help me .. sorry for the long thread , but i thought you have to know the big view so you can help me more effiecently ,, salam.. el-saher >>

Re: Can I Do That ? well ctg , i think you misunderstood me abit here .. what i mean isnot writing these things in the epic i'm writing now , i meam starting new stroy , some sort like new seperate novel , made of character's daily events by their ownselves .. that what i meant .. in other words i'll write two novels at the same time , one is the original one in the epic , and the second is a branch from it , containing events in pov of my characters " first person " at certain situations occuring in the first story .. i hope u can understand me .. so what do you think ? can i ?

Re: Can I Do That ? well .. at first i - as everybody - write what i like , follow my feelings , and when i start writing by so many characters seperate from each other , i felt that this is wrong.. the readers read for the story , for the plot , that's cool , but every reader has his hero , his favourite character , when he feels he is away from his character , or he reads so many chapters without his presence in the story , he get seperated from the novel .. for me when i thought and still thinkning about this situation i find myself doing that .. the problem is i write so few description , not - as before - talking about so many character thoughts , impression , feelings .. this is because the new style in writing that force me to jump over some things that are not necessary to be shown .. i thought if i do this another way , like writing about these characters thoughts , feelings in another novel , i think i could compensate my failure in the main story , my failure of making normal life in an adventure\action story .. that's why i want to try this way..

Re: Can I Do That ? You can always make short stories based on your individual characters, and collect those stories under one covers - to give depth in their life. Their stories doesn't have to correlate with your epic storyline.

Re: Can I Do That ? No, not really. You can use them to expand the references that you tell via these characters in your epic storyline, but then again, you can create them other stories that expand your world a bit more. Don't limit yourself.

Re: Can I Do That ? hello m2m i find that characters want to do this a lot - they always want to escape from their story and from their author and have a life of their own. which isn't a bad thing in itself, but it can harm your writing, as you are finding, and i think you may already have touched on one of the answers. if you know what kind of adventures your characters will have outside of your main story, make notes for each character or each group of characters. if the adventures are neccessary to the main story, include them in the main story. if they are not relevant, leave them as notes and come back to them later, after you have finished your main story,to give your audience more about the characters they like. Tolkein did this (sort of) in LOTR - the story of Aragorn and Arwen isn't in the main text of the book; rather, it is included as an Appendix at the very end of the book. hope this helps, chap s
