How about the Gor series (Chronicles of Counter-Earth) by John Norman?

Re: old book-mercenaries

The description covers so many books featuring mercenaries. Are they a collection of mercenaries from different planets (in which case it could be "Hammer's Slammers" by David Drake, or "Mercenary" by Jerry Pournelle, for instance) from different times (perhaps "The big time" from Fritz Lieber or Janissaries, again by Pournelle) or a combination of the two, in which case no story springs immediately to mind.

There are two possibilities: The Forever War by Joe Haldeman and Ranks of Bronze by David Drake. If I'm wrong on both counts, ah well. Tried, anyway.

The second and third volumes of Janissaries ( um "Clan and crown" and "Storms of victory, if I remember correctly) were brought out under one cover as"Tran" and yes, on the Baen site it, and the original Janissaries" are both still marked as "available". So they should be findable, anyway. The fourth volume has been promised for – oh, six years at least.

Re: old book-mercenaries

Janissaries sounds right.

Harry turtledove's Misplaced Legion series is also in this vein - with a Roma Legion transported. There were some other ones by another author about an American civil war regiment transported. Another is Wargames´in the Dr Who series - with troops being kidnapped from all sorts of conflicts.
