| Years ago, I read a short story in a SF/fantasy anthology that I am trying to find once again. It has a certain dreamike, discconnectedness to it, so it's rather memorable. Storyline -- A lawyer finds himself living in a home somewhere. He can occasionally hear sounds and voices from other rooms, but when he walks in, no one and nothing is there. Food rather mysteriously appears on the dining room table at appropriate times. One day, he leaves the house to go for a walk. When he returns, something has changed. He finds piles of files that he is expected to read containing cases that he is expected to decide or pass judgment on. He has a feeling that this is the job he has searched for all of his life. There is a vague suggestion that he has in fact died, and that this is his version of the afterlife. Sound familiar? Any assistance would be very much appreciated. |
