This is, I imagine, a very tentative date at this stage, but I'm coming up with sometime in 2010. After all, it is a massive undertaking, and I don't think they've even got a final draft of the script yet....

Re: The Hobbit

Being a big fan of the LotR effort, which I thought worked surprisingly well on screen, I'm really looking forward to The Hobbit. And two parts sounds great as it will last longer!!!

Re: The Hobbit

I heard that Peter Jackson was going to do it but there was some conflict about who would have control ... last I heard they were looking at other directors and it might be a 3 part movie, due out in 2010 or so. If they cannot reach resolution I would not hold my breath.
Without a lot of additions or script enhancement I don't see how they could get enough material out of this book to make 3 good movies.

Enjoy!

I concur, I just hope Peter Jackson gets the project; the kind of effort he put in with LOTR is unheard of. I heard that before he did the King Kong movie (which I didn't like, to put it mildly) he was set actually to direct the Hobbit; unfortunately some financial dispute between his company (westa digital?) and New Line Cinema...ended this.

Cheers, DeepThought

The Peter Jackson saga is over. He has signed on for the Hobbit.

Re: The Hobbit

I think that's good news then, it's only right he gets to do it after the excellent result with LotR.

Re: The Hobbit

Last I heard, they were planning two films. One essentially was The Hobbit itself, the other was to deal with the intervening years between it and LotR. This, however, may well be nothing but rumor....

That should be interesting...
There's not much by JRRT on the years 2942 to 3018....about three-quarters of a page in The Tale of Years.

That's my own memory of what I'd come across. I don't put too much stock in anything at this stage, other than the fact Jackson has been signed to co-produce, at any rate. Until the film is actually well on its way to being in the can, anything can happen....

Re: The Hobbit

Glad to hear that Peter Jackson will be the one to do the movie. I also was a huge fan of the LOTR movies.

I remember reading that there was some problems between him and New Line, and they at one point decided he wouldn't be part of it. I thought they were crazy for making a decision like that.

How many people would go see The Hobbit if it wasn't by the same man who did LOTR? I'm guessing most people would, but wouldn't enjoy it as much seeing as it would not flow as well with the LOTR movies.

Now I guess we just sit and wait!

I'm afraid the saga isn't over yet because the Tolkien estate is involved in a court case with New Line, who have paid over none of the percentage money agreed on the three films.

Until this is settled, all plans for the Hobbit are on hold as the estate has frozen its permission, quite rightly in my opinion!

Re: The Hobbit

Wow! That's terrible of New Line. Sounds like they aren't the greatest company to work with....

Do you know where you heard about this? I would like to read more about it Mary.
