I would like to add my voice to that, urging people to do so with inappropriate messages. If it's a case of misunderstanding, it can almost certainly be cleared up. If it's something that is genuinely inappropriate, we don't need them on the forum....

I just heard abou this PMing dude and I think I can guess what identity he was going by (actually, I think I'm wrong, now, I've just noticed this is all a year old - sorry ), but what concerned me most is that Christyrocks was getting similar PMs. Could it have been the same guy under another ID? There may be a way to protect against that, I don't know, but the main thing is that people should realise that they can and should report anything like this as early as possible, otherwise they and others might become more distraught than necessary.

So, is there an obvious mechanism in place? Something that shows the would-be bad-bastard that we're ready for him and to let people report abuse as early as possible. Maybe a banner thread or something.

Or maybe there is one and I never noticed it.

And maybe that's partially my point.
I believe IP verification might work. In fact some web developers use IP verification instead of cookies for login and such. Just a little something I learned when I was studying web developement security issues. I'd never send an inappropriate PM on purpose. A year old? Another stupid mistake for me.

The problem with IP address verification is that where two or more people work for a large organisation, their IP addresses within the organisation are derived from a private IP address pool and are unique but when they interact with the outside world they will all present the same IP address - that of the organisation.

"It's worse than that... Jim!"

Since many of our members are students, that "organisation" is actually a school or university. We can ban and have banned IPs, but don't want to ban a whole school for the actions of one individual who may or may not have left anyway.

Also many ISPs use a pool of IPs for their customers i.e. AOL which they assign randomly as you log in. This saves them lots of money; the equivalent of 'hot-seating' in offices. We don't really want to ban whole ISPs, although some in India and China seem to be the source of 90% of the spam we receive.

I'd love to know what this odd little word actually means! A member on my msn contact list from canada (Avril Lavigne's cousin as it happens) has it in his name but I have no idea of its meaning!

Re: On Inappropriate PMs

It's an internet typo for "owned"...comes from gaming, I think. You know, "I just totally owned you!" "You just got totally pwned!"

I think you can pronounce it "p-owned" or "p-awned".

But yeah, I REALLY don't like that kind of thing.......
three rules
1,treat every body you meet like youd want your gramma treated.
2,remember even if they are smoking hot they have a momma ,sister and daddy just like you.
they allready know how they look so dont tell them treat them like a buddy and see if they dont want to be your freind and not a kissing toy?.

Re: On Inappropriate PMs

as i said before only 3v rules in life.
1,treat every body like you would want your grandma treated.
2,treat every women or [man if you fly that way]even if they got beckman abbs,a front pourch you could read a book on and a rear deck you could sreve drinks on. think of how her/his daddy would feel if they saw you.
3,if you treat them like a freind maybe you might get tyo know them as a freind and not just a snuggle body.
