Another Attempt at a Moorcock Bibliography

I sometimes think a person's got to be just a little nuts to attempt this. Nevertheless, I've given it a go. This will have to be in several installments, and I'm splitting it up into Chronological, Series, and Omnibus Editions, for easier reference. I have no doubt that I've overlooked some things, but this includes all I'm aware of, culling from several source: Sweet Despise site, isfdb, fantastic fiction, Richard Bilyeu's The Tanelorn Archives bibliography, and my own not inconsiderable collection of Moorcock's work. I have not attempted to include all printings, etc., but only those which are especially notable or containing revisions, etc. Any omissions, please let me know, and (with Brian's permission) I'll insert them into the list.... First, of course:

JD one I did not see listed was the Novella "The Jade man's Eyes" 1973 published by The Unicorn Bookshop, cover artwork by Jim Cawthorn ISBN 0 85659 010 x. I also have the Flashing Swords series

Another one you may be interested in is The Age of Chaos:The Multiverse of Michael Moorcock, Jeff Gardiner published by BFS 2002 ISBN 0 9538681 1 7

It's there, labeled as a single-story paperback edition (I didn't give the publisher). I no longer have a copy -- at least, I've not seen mine since the divorce -- but it was a nifty thing; well worth picking up if you can find it at a reasonable price. It was, in fact, "The Jade Man's Eyes" that first got me into Moorcock, when it was published in Flashing Swords. A few years ago, when he was at the store I worked at for a signing, I handed him a copy of that book (the original copy I got over 30 years ago, and still in near-mint condition despite my periodic rereading of it. At first he didn't even remember having a story in that particular book; then, when he saw the date and heard it was the first story of his I'd read he was (in popular parlance) tickled pink.

Nice to be able to do that for a writer whose work has given you so much....

Yes, I'd like to get my hands on it, but the copies I'm seeing right now are a bit beyond my current budget. Hoping I can pick one up a little later, though; and thanks for bringing that one in....

Oh, and one I forgot to include in the Elric series: the recent publication of the entire graphic novel Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer; now duly added....

Re: Another Attempt at a Moorcock Bibliography

I have had my copy for years and a spare one to boot if you would like to replace yours.

I have most of MM books on the list except the Pyat ones which I was never keen on and the 3 mars or warrior ones read them but did not keep them and White Wolf's Son which I may be able to get at Eastercon next month in the dealers room.

Did you ever get the Lovecraft one from the BFS.

I may take you up on that.... The Pyat books are ... difficult. He's such a despicable character in many ways, is Max; yet he's also the culmination of many aspects of Moorcock's Champion -- always self-deluding; with (to his own mind) the best of intentions yet, by attempting to force reality to fit his ideal, causing horrendous damage; a cynic and an innocent at the same time. I found the first fascinating but the second and third rather a chore the first time 'round. I had a reread a few years later, and became entranced by the prose, and the different layers of the character. Now I'd put them high on the list of Moorcock's best work; right up there with Mother London (though that is a much, much more warmhearted book...). Not for everyone, though, as Pyat is a character it is impossible to truly like....

And yes, I did get the one on HPL. Thanks for going to so much trouble and for checking....

pm me your snail mail and I will post it surface, or if you know anyone who is coming over to Eastercon at Heathrow who you will be seeing I can pass it on.

Re: Another Attempt at a Moorcock Bibliography

I suppose that, while I'm at it, I might as well note the two issues of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian comic (issues 14 & 15), which were plotted by Moorcock and Cawthorn, and brought Conan and Elric together:

"A Sword Called Stormbringer!" (#14)
"The Green Empress of Melniboné (#15)

which (more-or-less) fall between Sailor on the Seas of Fate and "The Dreaming City"....

Re: Another Attempt at a Moorcock Bibliography

Well, it seems the information I had on the forthcoming Elric book is slightly off. There will be a six-volume set, apparently, and it does contain previously uncollected material (and possibly some new material)... but not necessarily in this volume. It looks as if it's going to be done the way the Howard volumes were done, so they'll be critical editions, lavishly illustrated, and with authoritative texts. They will also be publishing the stories in the original order of publication, rather than in the chronological order of the series. I'll definitely be getting them, and I'd suggest getting them to anyone seriously interested in Moorcock's work....
