But, since Martin has said he was abandoning the idea of a 5 year gap I start to wonder if Rickon will be old enough to play the part GRRM intended for him. Perhaps Bran, or even Jon or Arya will be accomplishing whatever story element Rickon was intended for. If so, what will Rickon do?

These are the things I worry about.
I thought it was pretty clear that Rickon was being kept alive to be the new Lord of Winterfell. No one is sure whether or not Bran can father an heir, so Rickon would be the logical choice.

But, my favorite character is quickly becoming Jaime. I absolutely love the way his story is unfolding.

That is a better explanation than any I had thought of. I guess I was assuming that if Bran and Rickon both survive then Bran would still be Lord of Winterfell.(since during ACOK he was still Robb's heir despite already being crippled) Clearly if Bran cannot reproduce he will have to pick an heir, and if Rickon survives and has progeny, problem solved. But I see no reason why this couldn't be accomplished with a sisterson.(unless Arya and Sansa both meet fates that preclude children, and I don't think they will both die) This gave me the impression that Rickon had some other/additional part to play in resolving the story.

However, saying Rickon is included as the last scion of House Stark makes much more sense than any of my crazy theories, and makes me worry for the lives of Arya and Sansa. Or maybe GRRM just wants a son of Eddard to inherit Winterfell, and the girls are safe.

Edit: And yes, Jaime is awesome. I think it is because he does what he thinks he should, and not what anyone else thinks is right.

Going by tradition, in the Seven Kingdoms (With the exception of Dorne) Bran and Rickon would supercede Sansa and Arya to the Lordship of Winterfell. That doesn't necessarily mean ill will befall the girls (although I'm rather bored with Sansa).

I'm beginning to like Jaime because he's finally realizing how bad he's screwed up...the revelaion that he'd become the Smiling Knight instead of Ser Arthur is beautiful

It's been my view for a long time that the next Lord of Winterfell will be whoever manages to rebuild and hold it, and at this point Sansa looks poised to be able to do so in the near future if her marriage to the Heir goes as planned.

I'm not saying anything. Every time I develop empathy for a character, GRRM wields the knife.

Doran's original plan was to marry Arianne to Viserys. Then Viserys was killed. That is why I claimed the plan was awful (past tense), because now he has the new plan with Quentyn. This is plainly stated in the last few pages of Arriane's last P.O.V. It's not some theory I made up.

I proud to say, as the only one on the board, i love the character of Stannis Barathorn, the uncompromising man, believing in justice and that the throne is his right, not because he wants it, but because its his right.
Just love that cranky old king

I kind of like Stannis. I can't find myself rooting against him, anyway. Maybe not a great guy to party with, but would be a fair king.

This is a really hard choice for me. Throughout the first book my favourite character was Eddard truly Then I suppose it was Jon, carrying the torch where his "father" left off I guess, filling the role of the strong and honourable leader of sorts.

But truly my favourite character now has to be Sandor Clegane. I sympathize with him and I have to believe he's alive. I don't know what it is exactly.

I like the Stannis that put Davos by his side, I do not like the Stannis that trusts in Melisandre.

My sister and I were having this conversation last night regarding Lost. I just finished watching the first season and she asked me who my fave was... she said her faves have changed from season to season. I feel this mirrors ASOIAF... our faves change book to book.

At the beginning of AGOT, I liked Eddard. Yet by the time Jaime ambushed Eddard and Tyrion had arrived at The Eyrie, my affection had swung to Tyrion. Tyrion was my fave all through ACOK. With the arrival of his own POV, Jaime joined Tyrion at the top of my list in ASOS. Since Tyrion did not appear in AFFC, Jaime is currently my favorite character.

Jaime will not be featured in ADWD... so who will be my fave? Odds are that I'll return to Tyrion. But if Tyrion refuses to even slightly work on his own redemption, then I might turn elsewhere. To whom?

I should also say that I like Tywin, Petyr, Varys, and Doran. I love political masterminds.

Jon is now in a position of leadership. He's shown the will to make some hard decisions... I like that. I know I've been down on Jon before, but if he takes up the mantle of political mastermind, then he'll rise considerably on my list.

I'm surprised Daenerys has got few votes. I think she's a great character, even just for releasing the slaves in Astapor (is it Astapor?).

Agreed! Not only that but I came to like Tyrion more because of his compassion for Sansa.
