The Ends of Anne's books.

I was just wondering what people though of how Anne ends her books. Only read her Pern series myself but she seems to end them kind of abruptly and I think there should be more to them sometimes.

Yes, I've thought this at times as well. It's almost as if she gets abruptly tired of that story, and wants to get on with a new one.

The other thing that's odd is her habit of making the title of the book the last words in the book as well - have you noticed?

Re: The Ends of Anne's books.

I tend to agree - some of the books do end rather abruptly, although at first I thought it was just me getting carried away and wanting more to them.

I hadn't noticed the "title being the last words of the book", but now that you mention it...

Re: The Ends of Anne's books.

Yeah I noticed that too pyan.

I thought her first books ended just incredibly fast just abrubtly without tying some things off until the next book...which is okay in series but it's odd the way she does it don't you think?

Re: The Ends of Anne's books.

Another problem is that she seems to be held in too high regard by editors. Most books she's written since 1990 (with the notable exception of Pegasus in Space) could do with a lot of quite heavy-handed editing. This is especially true of Skies of Pern and Freedom's Ransom. Both books read like clumsy first drafts. A shame really, given what a talented writer she was at her best.

Re: The Ends of Anne's books.

looking at her style in all but one or two books, she started the story in the middle, right before a turning point in the overall plot of the universe. then ended at another major turn. ready made sequels and prequels. the only book offhand I can think of that started fairly close to a beginning, was Damia. The only book I can think of that could have been tough to toss a sequel onto was All the Weyrs of pern.that one was as close to ending a book as I've seen her do.

only one book of hers I can think of where she ended a book with another book title. that was at the end of Dragonsdawn. and it wan't even a title of a book, but the name of the first trilogy.

Not another book, Ghost, the name (or close to it) of the book that the ending is of, if that makes sense....

Re: The Ends of Anne's books.

Damia is the sequel to The Rowan.

Pegasus in Space has a pretty decent ending, it really is the end of an era.

The series that really cries out for another sequel IMO is the Catteni Sequence (Freedom books).

Re: The Ends of Anne's books.

It made sense Pyan, however, what I was saying is that I haven't run across a book of hers that the last sentence of the book had the title of the book in it. the closest I found was what I described.

manephelien. I know Damia was the sequel of the Rowan. but I was describing how the story actually started at a beginning, instead of in the middle. then it tied into the series.

yes Pegasus in space did have something like an ending, but it was another cusp of plot. the Talents just started lobbing cargos across the universe. which ties in nicely to The Rowan era.
