Teen crossing country to the shore

I look for a book about a teenage boy who has been "magicked" from home to some other country. He believes that he can return home if he reaches the shore. I think he arrived at some farm and stayed there for a while. He had at least one companion on his trip and was betrayed by him/her. The journey is across country without any larger settlements. Only at the journeys end are many people who want to cross the sea. Around this time he realises that he is dead. I am not sure whether his betrayers turned out to be good in the end. I used to believe that this book was "The Homward bounders" by Diana Wynne Jones, but this is not so. I am even not sure that the book was written in English as I read it in Sweden.
