Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

yah - for some reason he takes longer to read than any other author - 87 pages into a storm of swords only -- but I should finish before he has finished A Dance with Dragons

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

Well his books are somewhat detailed. They cram a lot of words onto one page. I have been rereading A Storm of Swords for awhile now, in between reading some new books (currently Gardens of the Moon). I am on page 220.

Seeing as how the UK will probably get Dance before we do in the US, you have less time than me to finish reading.

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

so true - but at least this time around I can make a grab for a hardback edition - mostly I don't like getting series in both types, but martain is good enough for a hardback (plus waiting is not really and option)

how are you finding Gardens of the Moon?

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

I have all the books so far in paperback, and I actually prefer reading a paperback, easier to hold. But I will get the hardcover because I can't wait for it to be out in paperback. I'm so jealous you will get it before us!

Confusing actually. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around everything, but I read some threads here and found that I am not the only person who had that trouble when they started reading it. I'm about 100 pages in right now.

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

yah there is a lot to Erikson at the start - best just to follow the story and fill in the blanks later - and don't get scared by book 2 its a big big shift in story telling (one could say continental!)

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

That's what I'd heard, but its hard...I want to know everything right now!

You mean a shift in how he writes, or the characters...?

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

characters -- he moves to another contient for the second book - kind of throws you at first as you don't hear anything of the characters you have grown to like in his first == but some do appear later on and in the end you can see the strong links to the first book. (and there are some new characters to like and hate )

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

ah yes...thanks for the warning. At least now I will be prepared for the shock. I generally don't like it when the authors do that...I get attached to the characters and want to follow them along. But like you said, just more characters to love....and hate.

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

yah I spent so much of that second book going = so where is the rest of the cast?
So any other great reads pass your way yet? I must admit have have 2 books by Fiona McInosh waiting to be sampled - never heard or read anything by her so should be interesting

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

I finished The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed that one. Any good reads for you? Haven't heard of Fiona McInosh though...is she a fantasy or sf author?

I just got some new books at a used book sale. Most of them were authors I have never read, so hopefully they will be good...

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

I seem to have bad luck with sales and charity shops - mostly its either too old and damaged or just not there - I am a rare thing

hmm Fantasy writer, which is most of what I read, Sci-fi is good, but I want to get through some of the fantasy greats before having my head blown apart by physics.
As for new reads, not much at the moment - a slower period of reading (and not really reading) so not getting through too much.

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

Not all science fiction has to be hard sciencey stuff that makes a slight whistling noise as it goes over your head. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a very funny, very light-hearted science fiction novel. Definitely one of my top reads (hence the username, of course). Flowers for Algernon has nothing to do with spaceships or far out technology or anything like that, it's just a very beautiful, very well written novel and possibly my favourite book ever. And you can't go wrong with a bit of Heinlein. Even in the books that involve a lot of calculations and physics and etc, like The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, there's still a fantastic story involved to keep you riveted. Love it.

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

Yes, it was mostly older stuff, but I decided it was so cheap, if I'm going to branch out then that would be the place to buy new stuff....new to me that is.

I read fantasy almost exclusively (that and some historical fiction) but I picked up a sci fi book so we'll see how that goes. I love McCaffrey, which I know some people consider sci fi, but to me its fantasy.

With a name like Overread, I'm surpised to hear you're not doing a lot of reading.

I got held up reading a 900+ page book which took me awhile to finish, so I'm glad to be on something new now. (that's why I started my reread of ASOS, to get me through the slower parts of that novel)

Re: The Tea Room, Mk. IV

I'm not against sci fi, just haven't really picked up anything that sounded really good to me. But I think some sci fi is very close to fantasy, like McCaffrey's Petaybee trilogy. Probably categorized as sci fi, but very fantasy like...to me anyways.

Hi Mir!!! How are you?
