Looking for book:"The Giant Dogs"

.....I'm looking for an SF book. I know the title; but not the author or publisher. My sister picked up a copy(in English) in an airport in Japan.

.....The plot goes something like: right after WWI, a mad scientist type; and quite a few followers; move to northern Canada; where they live in near complete isolation. The people in the small town, through a combination of genetic engineering; selective breeding; and some very ingeneous surgery; manage to come up with dogs who walk on their back legs; have manlike hands; and can speak English. The dogs do most of the town's dirty work.

.....The story starts in modern times; a few years after the Dogs killed their masters; and moved to New York. There was enough gold and jewels in the town to make the dogs extreamly wealthy. They're fighting a lenghthy court battle to gain legal status. In the meantime, the dogs feel a nameless foreboding that without some overlooked something from their city; they will soon revert to being dumb animals. Yet they refuse to reveal the location of their village- for fear of being held accountable for the killings.

.....Most of the dogs do lose their minds- for reasons never revealed.

.....Strange kind of book. It was SF; but had an ambience more like a bedtime story- with all kind of "Max Headroom" type advanced/archaic technology created in isolation by the cult members- or whatever you want to call them.

.....I'd like to locate a copy of the book to read it again. Our copy was destroyed in a local flood.

Are you sure about the title? It sounds more like this one:

Lives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis

I have "Huge Dogs", "Large Dogs", "Big Dogs" and "Super Massive Hot Dogs" but alas no "Giant Dogs."
