Exclamation Mystery Books

Lets see how good your memories are; I have read a lot of Sci-Fi in my time and have hung on to most of it, however there are two novels which have stuck in my mind and I would really like to read them again. The only problem is that I cannot remember the titles or the name of the authors. So, two books, here is a brief description as I remember them (and it was a LONG time ago).

  • A station is found in space, left over from some old and long dead civilization. Aboard the station are many ships each of which can be programmed (in a way not understood) to fly to a specific and distant destination. The station is populated by treasure hunters who use the ships to fly to exciting new places and rob them. Many do not return or return dead.
  • On a desert planet far from Earth there exist a place which is rich in archeological treasures but suffers from some kind of “Temporal Displacement” which manifests itself in the form of a wind. Those caught in such a wind find themselves shifted, not in space but time. Treasure hunters (again!) wear protective suits in an attempt to survive the storms.

And there it is. If anyone can help with titles or authors names I would be very grateful. Alternatively if you know a good place where such a question could be asked I would love to hear about it. It would be great if you could e-mail me direct at freeserve.

All the best.

Re: Mystery Books

Well spotted - the first book is definitely Frederik Pohl's Gateway. I'm afraid I'm not able to place the other one - I hope someone can, it seems interesting!

Re: Mystery Books

The Gateway book sounds interesting... Have to look into that one, even though Pohl hasn't exactly jumped out at me as a good writer... Guess I looked at the wrong books in the bookshop...

Re: Mystery Books

I would definitly reccomend all of them. Easy read, lot of adventure, some food for thought with the Heechee philosophy, and great characters.

Re: Mystery Books

Temporal displacement and wind ? Isn't the second one simply Hyperion by Dan Simmons ?

Re: Mystery Books

Thank you all, so very much.

I`ve done some checking and you are right, all of you. the first book is definitely Gateway. If you like the sound of it and woukd like to know more try this:

http://www.sfreviews.com/docs/Freder...76_Gateway.htm

Not too sure about the second though. Does anybody know for sure?

Remembered something else about the 2nd book; when the "time wind" comes the treasure hunters in their protective suits are shot skywards to avoid it or else the suit slams their legs up into the torso (hard enough to break them) so that it (the suit) can run unhindered by the occupant.

Jog any memories?

Paul

No need to post all other the place, once is enough. her's your answers: http://www.chronicles-network.net/fo...ead.php?t=4314. May I suggest you not to leave your mail clearly printed ? That's the best way to have spam in your mailbox.

Re: Have you read these books?

paul2004wells, I advised the Mod who looks after this part of the board to delete this thread.. As it is also on SFF Lounge, I don't think it needs to be repeated here... Although the Mod may opt to move the other one here if felt to be more appropriate...

#1 Gateway, best of the series.
#2 time storm by gordon r dickson, similar? I read it 20 years ago. Good book even if not the one your searching for.

Good Luck
