Re: Soldier Son - New Series

Would be interesting to see replies on this topic as it is new I will be able to get it about a half a year after it is available in the english speaking world. I prefer to see a GRRM book come out before another Hobb novel as I like is style better but I would snatch another by her as well.

I think here's a link for it:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...695735-8523603

I don't know how amazon already has a synopsis and all that good stuff, but from what they write things sound kind of dull. Also, it's due out in July 2005.

i suppose it does sound a little bit boring Perhaps i will wait until i read some reviews when people buy it. It could be that the books not well presented and it's got some hidden treasures in the plot

Yea I definitely think something is missing from that summary. Hobb hasn't disappointed yet and I'm sure it will be another good series!

I cant imagine a novel by Robin Hobb that would be boring, I swear she could write about doing laundry and make it interesting. Also that is one of the worst synopsis reports I have ever read, the person who wrote it, I believe, did not read the book.

The publish date to that link says 4-07-05, which has already passed. But when I used it's link to amazon.com, amazon has it set at July 4, 2005. This new synopsis is certainly much more interesting than the old one though.

Re: Soldier Son - New Series

Hmm. I am still in love with Fitz's character and his wolf, but I'm open to the new series, if the author is Robin Hobb. I hope I'll love it as much as the Farseers's trilogies.

It's a UK publisher so the 4-7-05 is July 4, 2005. Rune, your link to the publisher's website isn't working but I was able to find the book by going to the homepage. There are a couple of other books that may be of interest there as well. http://www.voyager-books.co.uk

Good point ... amazon has it scheduled for the US on September 1, 2005.

Re: Soldier Son - New Series

I just talked to my UK/Voyager Rep who has confirmed a August 1, UK release for those interested.

I'm not sure how "new" it is but I was jsut sent this excerpt, and psoted it to my site (I am not promoting as I am bound to only use such promo info on my own site by the publisher)

Check it out HERE

Re: Soldier Son - New Series

Just received an email from Ms. Hobb ,who clerified that the excerpt I recieved from Harper's is outdated and this one (one we have seen) is the more accurate (my apologies for any inconveinience) Still no comment on the possibility of a delay:

Quote:
Young Nevare Burvelle is the second son of a second son. Traditionally
in
Gernia, the firstborn son is heir to the family fortunes, the second
son
bears a sword and the third son is consecrated to the priesthood.
Nevare
will follow his father -- newly made a lord by the King -- into the
cavalry;
to the frontier and thence to an advantageous marriage, to carry on the
Burvelle name. It is a golden future, and Nevare looks forward to it
with
relish.
For twenty years King Troven's cavalry have pushed the frontiers of
Gernia
out across the grasslands, subduing the fierce tribes of the plain on
its
way. Now they have driven the frontier as far as the Barrier Mountains,
home
to the enigmatic Speck people. The Specks -- a dapple-skinned,
forest-dwelling folk -- retain the last vestiges of magic in a world
which
is becoming progressive and technologised. The 'civilised' peoples base
their beliefs on a rational philosophy founded on scientific principle
and a
belief in the good god, who displaced the older deities of their world.
To
them, the Specks are primeval savages, little better than beasts.
Superstitions abound; it is said that they harbour strange diseases and
worship trees. Sexual congress with them is regarded as both filthy and
foolhardy: the Speck plague which has ravaged the frontier has
decimated
entire regiments.
All these beliefs will touch Nevare's training at the Academy; but his
progress there is not as simple as he would wish. He will experience
prejudice from the old aristocracy: as the son of a 'new noble' he is
segregated into a patrol comprising other new nobles' sons, all of whom
will
encounter injustice, discrimination and foul play in that hostile and
deeply
competitive environment. In addition, his world view will be challenged
by
his unconventional girl-cousin Epiny; and by the bizarre dreams which
visit
him at night. And then, on Dark Evening, the circus comes to Old
Thares,
bringing with it the first Specks Nevare has ever seen...
