| Scott Oden Has anyone else read any of Scott Odens books? MEN OF BRONZE About the fall of the Eygyptian empire from the standpoint of the general in charge of the defense of the Empire against the Persians. I've Just finished reading the second book. MEMNON is basically about a greek general who fought for the Persian Empire against Alexander the Great. I really enjoyed both these books and have just read from his website that the next book named MEDJAY has been scrapped as he didn't feel he could do justice to the book as his heart wasn't into it. The next book he's working on is apparently called Lion of Cairo and is due out in 2008. His website is Scott Oden - Explorations in Antiquity |

| Re: Scott Oden I have read Men of Bronze and liked it. Barca was a interesting main character. I loved seeing a good story like this about Ancient Eygpt, with all the culture, the gods and everything. |

Was a bit gutted at the end, felt there could have been another book out of him. Memnon is a similar type of book, showing the perspective of the Persians to Alexander.

| Re: Scott Oden Haven't read Men of Bronze, but I am facinated by Alexander the Great and that period. So when I happened upon Memnon in Waterstones, I picked it up and thoughly enjoyed it. It was a refreshing viewpoint. The Obvious bias toward Memnon himself, due to who was telling of him and his life, I thought was well written and allowed for artistic licence, although at times the huge leaps forward to different times in his life was a little frustrating. I'm now looking out for Men of Bronze as I enjoyed Oden's easy read style. |

As a side not I'm just starting ALEXANDER 'The Virtues of War' by STEVEN PRESSFIELD, it's got some good reviews and if it's as good as some of his other work then I can't go wrong with this.

| Re: Scott Oden I have looked at these books, but was slow to pick them up. Too many dissapointing reads on the historical front recently. I might go ahead and get them on the strength of the above posts. nj1, The Virtues of War is a good read, but not as good as Pressfield's previous books. |

Nearly a third through Alexander and can see what you mean, not bad, but read better. Have you tried reading Robert Low's two books THE WOLF SEA and THE WHALE ROAD, both very good books in my opinion, well written, lots of action and deeply researched. Based on a group of Norse raiders called the Oathsworn, the books follow thier exploits across much of europe and the middle east (I was supprised to read how far such people travelled).

| Re: Scott Oden I have those books on my to get 'list' when I go on holidays and lounge by the sea. Good to see that you recommend them as I love anything about the Norse. Holidays are the only time I get to do some real reading these days. |
