I agree with Maji in some ways. you cant really solo on a bass, its an accompaninment instrument really. Great fun tho iimagine(and music should be fun!)
Oh and i believe Keane dont have a bass player.........

They don't, and instead use the left hand on the piano... at least, I think they do. That's what any other sensible piano player would do in a band with no bass. Then again, they're a band with no bass... sensible? Keane? Haha!

But yeah, I agree with Charlene - damned hard to play with a bass part (whether it be a bass guitar, double bass, or the lower brass in a band, etc). Harder to play with a bass part than it is to play without a drummer.

Okay... check this out:

John Entwistle... bass solo. A bad a** one at that.

I want to add... that he is NOT using a pick... :-)

YouTube - John Entwistle bass solo

If you do not want to watch a five minute bass solo... then, how about this:

(Les Claypool... 53 second solo.)

YouTube - Les Claypool-Bass solo

Thank you, Lenny. As a bass player myself... I defend it whenever possible... I don't know about other bass players out there... but, I get sick of hearing about, "such and such is the greatest guitarist, etc." What about the bass? It's like people forget the bass player is there... and that's a shame.

It takes just as much talent to play the bass as it does to play the guitar. Granted, AE35Unit was right to say that it's hard (and sometimes never heard of), to accomplish a great bass solo... but it has been done. (View my previous post. )

Re: Show us your instrument! ... Stop that, it's silly.

I like guitar solos as much as the next person and yet one of my all time favourite bands, The Cat Empire don't use guitars at all, so you can make great music without any instrument. In the end if people are having fun and love what they do that shines through.

...and I've got to admit I love playing bass .

Quok! Good afternoon (here, anyway!), sir, how're things?

Re bass solos, we all seem to be forgetting Geddy Lee, don't we, folks? Billy Sheehan, too...(I only know him from his Mr. Big days, but he was an incredible bass player and I saw him solo at least twice).

Er...coming back to the thread, attached below is the Ovation I described earlier in the thread (camera was on the fritz at that point). Posted this elsewhere in Chrons, too, but what the hey?!

Honestly, though... what do you have against the bass?

(Think about this: it is nearly impossible to have a band without a bass guitar... which keeps the rhythm going, which is obviously a VERY important element to any song.)
*cough* Thats what a drummer is for *cough*

Ya'll are funny.

I'll have to dig out my instruments and snap some shots - Flute, Piccolo, piano, sis's Alto Sax that I've been tinkering with... mallets for xylophone, etc (man, where did I put those?)...

You betcha, although not as much as the 12-string. And mostly it's holding down 2 strings instead of 1 for chords and "individual" notes, so not really that much more work, chief!

Re: Show us your instrument! ... Stop that, it's silly.

Bass playing is very fun, I've only tried it a few times but I always enjoy it. (And it has always been one practice then straight to live performance).
I still prefer my guitar though for the solos which people tell me were great but I can't remember them after I've played them

Re: Show us your instrument! ... Stop that, it's silly.

Lots of nice instruments here folks!

Especially the banjo. Someday I want to own and play one. I've found that sometimes, what a song needs, more than anything, is some nice banjo. Love that instrument to death.

I'll post some pics later of my studio.

I just ordered a new instrument...first time I've tried something new in a very, very long time (I play guitar, bass, drums and keyboard and do electronic production). Anyhow, I ordered this:

A Carter Starter pedal steel guitar.

Re: Show us your instrument! ... Stop that, it's silly.

I used to take lead parts on the bass all the time. One of my bass-heroes, Peter Hook from New Order, does as well. Not so much soloing, but lead bass playing. I also play bass with a lot of effects, like delay, distortion, phaser, and stuff.

Anyhow...

Finally getting my recording studio set up in my new house. It's not pretty, yet, but it will be quite functional in another day or two.

Here are some pics.

This is a work in progress, but this will probably be the last room to be remodeled.

So long as I can make sweet music, it's all good.

No guitars shown. My old electric is in the shop, my bass is in another room, and my acoustic is as well.
