I'm sure if she did write an eighth book it would cause much excitement and everything but who would actually like to read it? I know there are plenty but she will have lost a lot of her current fan base in 10 years (don't start bringing up Tolkien, I have already thought about that). I'm sure a lot of people would be at the I don't care stage about the books. If the films hadn't been made so soon after the books, say they had made the first one in a couple of years time, the books would still be relatively close to the front of peoples minds. Ten years and the books could have disappeared quite a bit.

Re: 8th book

I can't see there being anything less than over-hype when, or if, she writes a new HP-verse based novel. Even if she says before hand that it's not connected, per se. Which does beg the question, how different could it still be and not use things from the current series. Say, for example, no shared characters (including historical or mentioned in passing ones, e.g. Olivander) and no shared locations (less likely, since she really needs Diagon Alley if it's UK based, or does she...?). Magic would still be the same, and after that she could pretty much do what she wants. Fundamentally the current series is written for children so features children as protagonists, thus requiring a consistently available child-centric location, thus a boarding school - to which the intended audience can relate. Or, does she write a YA, or adult novel, for which she could thus start anywhere...

Re: 8th book

I think waht she'd need most was something utterly different.

For example, a 1st person adult novel that has no wizards or magic. Otherwise, it'll all just be "oh, this just isn't Harry Potter," responses.

You do hold a good point there.

As an "eighth book", as per thread, or as a next book? Not sure she could do a eighth "HP-verse book without magic, else what's the point of it being HP-verse...?

I've said I don't want a book8. I was just talking abut how I think she should go in a different direction.

Thumbs up Re: 8th book

Hi I am new here but I would like J.K. to write Tom Riddle's Story now that we know that Tom is Dead. I want to know more about our Dead Foe? Cause I am sorry but I hated book 6 everytime he went in and saw Tom's Life the Book was harder to read for me. I dont know about anyone else but I want to know More about the Adventures Surrounding Tom Riddle! I would like to Live the Adventure in stead of read about someone. I loved every Harry Potter Book Except Book 6. Does anyone else share My thoughts about a Tom Riddle Series! J.K.'s already got the Road Map so all She has to do is fill in the Blanks!

Re: 8th book

A bit like David/Leigh Edding's use of Rivan Codex and the other couple of over-seeing books, to add to the various Garion novels?

Re: 8th book

I think if she was going to continue to do this it'd be better to have a story about S. Black somehow, since he is--IMO--the best character in the series. T. Riddle would also be good, I think, but the very black-and-white terms that he was displayed with earlier might make it a somewhat unsatisfying read. (Actually, Snape is the only character in the series I can think of that isn't in black-and-white terms)

Or how about Albus's Life Story? There another good one!

Re: 8th book

For me, I just don't think any new books she writes will click the way HP did, simply because the readers kept buying and buying to know what happened in the Harry Potter books. If she starts a new series, she may be able to sell a few books from reputation alone but if it doesn't live up to HP, it won't go well with her fans.

I think she's rich enough not to write any more books for the sole purpose of money and maybe she should just write a few books just to keep busy.

Re: 8th book

Personally I think that she should now leave the HP books, as good as they are, and do something completely new...or...live the rest of her life with all the money she already has, take an early retirement.

Re: 8th book

So, we're kind of ignoring that JKR, as a person, loves writing - for herself, as a way of passing the time. I guess she doesn't have to get them published...

I never said she should never write again but I don't think she needs/should get anything else published.

Why not?
There's nothing like sharing what you write with others.
But she should write her future books more for her own interest rather than to gain recognition and such.
