Angry Excessively Early Easter

Good morning sir, welcome to the store. How was your Christmas? Would you like to buy a Cadbury's Creme Egg?

What?!?!

Yes, there it's the 27th December and there's still cold turkey in the fridge. And the stores are selling Easter merchandise.

Am I the only one to think this is two months too early?

Re: Excessively Early Easter

It has been happening for a few years now. Just as 'Christmas' - type adverts seem to get earlier every year and adverts for Summer holidays start on Christmas Day. It's the relentless march of commercialism. I'm assuming, though, that these strategies must work, otherwise the companies concerned wouldn't bother.

Re: Excessively Early Easter

Stores can't just conjure up extra space when it's needed and make it go away when it's not anymore. So, many have a dedicated place called the "seasonal" section, where stuff that's only needed at certain times of year goes so it can easily be replaced when the seasons change. This includes not just holiday stuff but also things like ice scrapers and barbecue fuel. When the Christmas stuff isn't being sold anymore, just leaving the shelves empty would be bad, so they fill them instead with general winter and spring supplies.

Re: Excessively Early Easter

There should be a law fixing the date of Easter sometime in April...
oh, hang on, there is!

The Easter Act 1928 provides that, in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, Easter Day shall be a fixed day in each year - the first Sunday after the second Saturday in April.
The Act has been on the statute book for 62 years but has never been brought into force.

Re: Excessively Early Easter

I've seen Valentine's merchandise, but not Easter yet. Mostly, the seasonal aisles are still full of left-over Christmas.

Usually, around here, there's a little bit of St. Patrick's Day merchandise before Easter starts to appear. Maybe a few items for the garden.

Re: Excessively Early Easter

Hehehe. I haven't had an opportunity to do any post-Christmas shopping anywhere yet, so I don't know what the stores are like right now, but I'd imagine they're much the same Teresa said the ones around her are....

Why complain over free-market capitalism? Just have a Cadbury Egg (personally I like the Dove ones) and wash it down with the eggnog on after X-Mas discount.

Easter is early this year: March 23rd.

Yes, Cadbury's Creme Eggs are vile. However, I like those little speckled chocolate eggs, whatever they're called. They can sell those all year round for me.

One of the local supermarkets had the Seasonal section directly opposite the shelves for the toilet tissues; trouble was, the sign for the row only mentioned the former. It made me wonder how their customers managed for the rest of the year.

Re: Excessively Early Easter

I like the creme eggs. Yes, I have a problem. I wish they had them now. They're still cleaning out the Christmas stuff at my local Walgreens. I'm expecting Valentine's stuff next, a short st patrick's day period, then Easter.

Re: Excessively Early Easter

Well I havn't been into a store over the last week, having just returned from holidays, but I find this just stupid to say the least. One would think they have plenty of time to flog of easter eggs and buns that they don't need to start just after christmas. Give us a break!

Re: Excessively Early Easter

Personally I hate the fact that my little local shop had a buy one get one free offer on Easters Eggs on Boxing Day for crying out loud!

But they are following demand. I used to work in a supermarket bakery, and we'd have people asking for hot cross buns all year round. So we started doing them, they sold well, and other people complained. Can't win either way.
