Can anyone help? Fantasy title.

Hi everyone.
I've been driving myself crazy trying to remember a book I read probably around 12 years ago. I'm not sure if it was very popular and I unfortunately only remember a little about it. The main character was a woman who's totem animal, not sure if they referred to it this way, was a mountain lion or puma. The cover of the book had her and the mountain lion on it. I remember her going on some journey and I think I vaguely remember her being able to shape shift into a mountain lion, but not for too long and her being captured. For some reason I remember some controversy with her totem animal, like people with wild cat totems were shunned or something.
The parts in blue are the parts I'm definitely sure of.

All of the sudden it came to me while aimlessly searching the amazon site. If anyone's interested, the book is by Tara K. Harper and is called Cat Scratch Fever.
