Re: Science Fiction Encyclopedia recommendation

Even though I have some disagreements with Clute on some things, I'd suggest John Clute's Encyclopedia of Science Fiction... certainly one of the most informative single-volume reference works you're going to find on the subject...

I agree with J. D. the only other I have found worth your time is The Science Fiction Encyclopedia by Peter Nicholls. It is a distant second to the Clute version.

Erm, the Peter Nicholls version is the first edition of the same book. Clute's is the second. Nicholls also worked on the second.

Interestingly, the third edition of the book is out at the end of 2008 and is so huge it's going to be released on CD/DVD and updated regularly via the Internet.

There's a companion volume, as well:
The Encyclopedia of fantasy by John Clute | LibraryThing

Re: Science Fiction Encyclopedia recommendation

I received the John Clute version a few years ago as a gift and have really enjoyed it. My is listed as the Illustrated Version. I don't know if it sacrificed information for pictures of book covers or is the pages are just bigger. The book has one of the lager page size in my collection. On the other hand, the idea of an updating CD is great. There should be no possible information loss.
