A little about where you live I'm sure that most of us Chronics are not glued to our PCs 24/7 and sometime travel more than a few miles from home. I thought it would be nice to give a little bit of info about the place where you live - so that we can place you in that setting when posting with you and, more importantly, have some wonderful info to hand if we are visiting your neck of the woods. So - I'll start. I live in Bexhill-on-Sea which is in East Sussex on the South Coast of England. It is generally warm and very rarely do we get frost or snow in winter. I live 10 minutes walk from the sea (which is warm enough to swim in even up to end November) and it's 17 miles to France. Also, just along the beach is where William the Conqueror landed to beat up the poor old Brits and take over. There are several Norman abbeys and castles (some still in good repair, some almost unrecognisable) dotted about and the countryside is a walk away. It's five miles to Hastings - going east and 13 miles to Brighton - going west. Gatwick Airport is one hour away on the train. London is two hours away by car. So all in all it's a very handy place to live. The people (the older variety mainly) are very friendly and almost every third house owns a dog or cat. Well, that's me! If I think of anything more - I'll post again. So, what about you? ![]()

Re: A little about where you live I am in New York...Queens, specifically. It is about an hour away (by public transportation..i.e. subway) from Manhattan. The part of Queens where I am from is residential, meaning, it contains houses as opposed to tall buildings. My house, where I live with my husband of 10 years *gasp*, our twin sons and my Mom (downstairs from us--she is a Godsend of a Grandmother ) is not very big, but it is cozy. I am about 5 minutes away from Shea Stadium, where the New York Mets play, and in the same vicinity is the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium, where the U.S. Open takes place. Both major airports, LaGuardia and J.F. Kennedy, are about 10-15 minutes away from me--depending on traffic.

Re: A little about where you live Well, I live in Cumbria, which is also called the Lake District. Can you guess what's nearby? Yep - sheep! ![]() The scenery here is beautiful, although it can be very wet at times since it is the district of lakes, but the people are friendly, Carlisle is clean, green, and pleasant, and it's only four miles from the Scottish border and 20 miles from the Solway Firth. If you ever want a holiday in a scenic English county, Cumbria is the place to be! I sound like a brochure. ![]()

Re: A little about where you live Doesn't sound much like Carlisle to me! ![]() I live in Southampton, on the South Coast. I'm about two minutes from the sea, though I wouldn't recommend swimming here at any time of year! A large commercial port, a thriving gravel and sand industry and an oil refinery nearby don't make for clean water..... London is about seventy miles away, and there are the South Downs just north of us. Across the city from me is the New Forest, just made a national park. The city is trying to make itself into a (quote) premier shopping destination (unquote) so we have a massive, brand new, mall. and lots of large chain shops - but we also have French, German and Dutch open-air markets most weekends. Next week it's the Boat Show, so the whole of the waterfront is covered with expensive white hulls at the moment..Not a bad place to live - but I'd rather be back where my roots are, in Cumbria....

Re: A little about where you live As many people know, I live in Exeter (due to going to Exeter university!) Although a city, it's generally quiet and peaceful around here...lots of tall town houses that look small and thin on the outside but are huge inside (much like the house I'm living in!) The high street is nice, one long street that has a fair amount of shops and some very nice small, quirky ones as well. Very close to places such as Dawlish, Torquay and Exmouth (which I regularly go to with friends to see the sea!) We have the open air markets as well sometimes, which are interesting to peruse. Of course, for much of my twenty years, I've lived in the Midlands. But I'll save that for another post, I can't be bothered to witter on about it at the moment ![]()

Re: A little about where you live I live in Dundee, Scotland's fourth city (after Glasgow, Edinburgh & Aberdeen) with a population of a little under 150,000. It's at 56.5N, 3W (roughly), sprawled along the north bank of the Tay Estuary (the Tay is the largest river on the British mainland in terms of volume of water carried to the sea, and its glacially scoured valley extends out across the North Sea basin). Recent glacial activity has shaped the area. The city skyline is dominated by The Law (trans. 'The Hill'), an extremely ancient volcanic plug about 3-400m high, and Balgay Hill, a lower, more rounded outcrop. Dundee is more than 800 years old, and has plenty of history. Unfortunately, the old mediaeval quarter, the Overgate (gate meaning street) was bulldozed to make way for a monstrous modernist shopping-centre in the 60s, which has recently had to be torn down and replaced by a new, soulless mall (one of two in the city centre). The old Dundee Castle no longer stands...the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul is built on top of its foundations (and is a nice church, though it's hardly Chartres). The city has two universities (Dundee and Abertay, the former of which is an offshoot of 15th Century St. Andrews, one of the oldest in the world). Two of the more notable tourist attractions are the RSS Discovery (the ship Scott sailed to the Antarctic in the first time, not on his fatal mission), and the HMS Unicorn, a Royal Navy frigate built in 1824. There is also the Verdant Works, a 19th Century jute mill which is now a museum documenting the city's rich industrial history. Shipbuilding and whaling were other notable factors in the economic history of the town. Best of all is Tannadice Park, home of Dundee United F.C. and venue for the second leg of the UEFA Cup Final back in 1987. ![]()

Re: A little about where you live I live in Perth, a Royal Burgh and centre of European trade 800 years ago, when Dundee was just a fishing-village (hence the bitter rivalry between the two). Just up the road is Scone Palace, in whose grounds stands a replica of the Stone of Destiny, on which the Kings of Scots were crowned (the last being John Balliol, son of the founder of Balliol College). Perth itself is well-known as the home of the 51st Highland Division (The Black Watch), and alongside the Tay run its 2 major parks, the North and South Inches, although the Roman fort which marked the terminus of the Gask Ridge is long gone. An interesting sidelight is the fact that, wherever you look outside Perth, you can see the hills, the Ochills to the south and west, the Sidlaws to the east and the Highlands to the north.

Re: A little about where you live I live in east London, about ten minutes walk from a statue of some of the 1966 England World Cup squad lifting the cup (I hate football) and about 30 minutes walk from Stratford, where the 2012 Olympic site is being built. It's rubbish around here. North London is better, or south London, or central London.
