Cat scratch fever or 'the moral implictions of rescuing those who do not wish to be rescued' i tried to rescue a cat. grabbed him, he grabbed me back three and a half weeks later, cat is still comming into the kitchen via the cat flap and rubbing against my legs for food, and i'm on my third course of antibiotics (this one intraveneous), with skin pealing from all the chemicals in my system. the cat was perfectly happy with his life before i tried to rescue him, i saw him as needing help but was obviously mistaken as that sod can take care of himself. therefore, i urge those who wish to rush out and rescue those in dire need: consider whether those in need actually want help, ask before you offer and most importantly remember: any animal can defend him/her self, and cat scratches can be nasty. this public saftey anouncement was brought to you by a slightly humbled princess in distress. ![]()

Re: Cat scratch fever Guessing from the rubbing on the leg part that he's not attacking you! We had a stray wander in one day (must be over 12 years old now) and used to swipe your hand if it ever went near, and picking up - forget that - she'd dig every claw into you - thick jumpers were a must. But wait ten years and old age has mellowed her to a loveable house cat and the only one of four cats we have that will stand its ground to a husky pup1 (one year old now)

Re: Cat scratch fever Oh yes, cat scratch fever is real and isn't fun at all! I hope that you feel better soon! I'll add to your public awareness message: Always clean out scratches immediately with alcohol or peroxide and check with a doctor as soon as possible.

Re: Cat scratch fever thanks guys, seems to be ok now, though i'm shedding like a snake - yuck. ragnar, that is sort of the point i was trying to get accross, i was trying to 'rescue' cat from a feral life, because i thought he needed it, he however is perfectly happy with the status quo.

![]() The RSPCA moved some feral cats from an old building near us last year & these guys were wearing so much protective clothing you'd have thought they were trying to catch full grown tigers. | |

Re: Cat scratch fever this is a tom who was abandond and has reverted to ferel. we're trying to catch him to neuter him (trying to keep the ferel population down), if he settles in, we'll rehome him, if he doesn't, we'll let him go back to the colony. but yeah, i've told the charity i help out, next time i want gloves!

Due Care, please ?? Rudy, our youngest cat, isn't *feral*, she was abused, re-homed and, 18 months on, is still paranoid. I can remember her doing a 'wall of death' around the room, then running right up the wall and over the door-frame. Retrieving her from 'wedged' under furniture was a case of inserting welding-gauntletted hand and withdrawing glove with 'tabmanian devil' painfully attached... Okay, she's mellowed, has befriended one of our other cats, may be gently petted while in his company. Catching her for vetting is still like tackling a chain-saw with its throttle jammed open... Today, however, she made the mistake of investigating the carrier I'd left 'just lying about'... Snag with feral cats is that many carry FIV and other incurable diseases. Also, while their hygeine may be impeccable, even house-cats have a remarkably toxic bite. Oh, yes, and that quick-firing 'catupuncture' device at each corner... Due Care, please ??
