I don't know if this is appropriate (linking to another forum), but I'm a member of this other forum, and there's this very useful thread that I'd like to forward you people to.

It's a very long thread compiled from another discussion entitled "Learn Writing with Uncle Jim". I believe there's a whole lot that can be gained from it, and I urge all who submit work for critique here to find some time to read through that thread as there's an enormous amount of information there directly from a very experienced (albeit not very famous) professional SF & F writer.
