Silver ring picture???

Okay,
I read some books back in primary school that I loved at the time but have never seen since. They were very thinnish paper back aimed at young children.

The main basis of the series was the main charachter, who lived in the 'real' world had a magic picture of a silver ring on his wall. everytime the fing glowed ( I think) he was transported to this other world where pirates abouned and some other stuff too! Not too vague at all. I've a feeling his Uncle was involved smehere as well.

If anyone else has any ideas at all as to what they are I'd love to hear them. Cheers, jez.
