Re: Who has a book?

Question: I recently had a fantasy novel published. However, I just joined this group, and it seems you prefer people to be members for awhile before sharing information about their work. Is this correct, or should I go ahead and post a message about my novel? If not, how long should someone be a member before posting on this particular thread?

Thanks, Terry Weide

Re: Who has a book?

The big taboo here is against spammers who drop in, post one message promoting their book (usually starting a new thread to do so), and then disappear never to be seen again.

But you've passed the first "test" by sticking around long enough to find this thread. So tell us something about your book.

(Beyond that, this is a very supportive community of avid readers. And just like anyone else, we're interested in hearing what our friends are doing -- particularly when it involves our shared interest in SF and Fantasy. The more time you spend here, the more opportunities to talk about your work will just naturally come up. And the best way to get the folks here curious about what you've written, is to let them see how far you share their interests.)

Re: Who has a book?

Okay, I'll tell you something...if there's enough interest, perhaps I'll post a link about it at a later time...

My novel is titled Dream of Power, Dream of Glory. It's a traditional fantasy novel, and has a basic good vs. evil plot. I wouldn't call it great literature, but it's an entertaining book, and most of the people who've read it have told me they've enjoyed it. Below is brief blurb. Again, if there's enough interest perhaps I'll post a sample chapter later.

All for the moment, best wishes, Terry

Blurb:

Do you love fantasy? Dragons, evil wizards, heroes and villains, battles for supremacy between the forces of good and evil? Then this story is for you. Indeed it is for anyone, teen to adult, who shares your love of fantasy and adventure.

Come and meet a beautiful witch named Cassandra, and a young champion, Eric Leafstone, who are on a quest to save the world. Facing extreme dangers, they journey to confront a god of evil. Yet they also acquire key allies—a wise-cracking, but formidable dragon, and a noble king embroiled in a deadly war on whose outcome hangs the fate of an empire. Before the adventure is over, swords will run red with blood, a titan will walk the earth, and ultimately, the fate of the world may be decided by what lies within a man’s soul.

This is high fantasy, and high fun, for those willing to turn the first page and step into the world of Dream of Power, Dream of Glory.

HMMM.. sounds interesting Terry...

Actually I must confess I've read some extracts from your book as you probably know and quite liked it....

I'm sure there'll be other interested parties before too long.

Good luck and nice to see you active on this forum...

Re: Who has a book?

Terry, when will post some more of your story?

Your 'blurb' sounded great. Dragons and wizards? I really like a fantasy story that has dragons and wizards in it!

Terry's press agent eagerly begins to count out equal portions of Terry's upcoming monetary windfall...

One for Terry three for Gollum, one for Terry five for Gollum, three for Gollum, ten for Gollum....

Methinks it's time to renogtiate the contract I have with my agent. I always did wonder why author's are invariably poor...

Rosemary, I'll post a short snippet below, and a link to my author page. If the moderators here choose to delete that link, I believe that if anyone is interested, they can probably find my book on Google. Well, it's on Amazon and Fictionwise. Anyway, here's a short snippet...

DREAM OF POWER, DREAM OF GLORY
CHAPTER ONE:

THE FOREST

Night. Trees. A forest dark and tall. There is a full moon, yet little light passes beneath the trees. However, here and there, in the darkest places, lights can sometimes be seen. The lights are not the moon ducking in and out of clouds, for it is a cloudless night. Rather, they wink on and off in intricate patterns, as if controlled by an erratic intelligence. The lights have a name, long since forgotten, for those who dwell in this land no longer believe in magic and the lights are of a magic nature as is their Mistress.

For uncounted ages she has lived alone in this great forest of oaks and pines. Her home is in the tallest tree, a giant oak, long ago hollowed out by her magic. She appears young, about twenty-five years of age, though her exact age is lost in the shrouds of time. Her hair is raven black. Her skin white as if cast from ivory. Her eyes silvery blue as stars in the night sky and her lips red as the embers of the setting sun. She is dressed in a loose fitting robe of silky red. She is all any man could ever desire, yet she lives apart from them as if in disdain.

Her name is Cassandra and she is the Mistress of the Lights. She is also the last true Mistress of Magic left in the world. The lights are the firefly lanterns and they have existed since time immemorial. They are not lanterns any child may make on a summer's evening by using ordinary fireflies. They are different because they are magic and, like their Mistress, are immortal. They hang from tree limbs in jars of colored glass; some red, some yellow, some blue, some green. The glass is unbreakable and is shaped in round balls not unlike globes.

In ancient times, these were known as the World Lanterns. Anyone who can read the patterns of the fireflies in the globes can tell what condition the world is in, whether there be war, or famine, or pestilence, and also all that has happened to the world and some of what will happen to it.

Such a one is Cassandra. Now and then, she glances at the lanterns, disturbed at what she sees. For the fireflies flicker ominously, telling her of the coming disaster, telling her that if the world is to be saved, it must be done quickly.

Time is running out.

Re: Who has a book?

On a similar note to my above remarks, here is an experience I had today that I'd like to share:

Business Tip 101--Save Good Book Reviews

If you're going to write novels, and someone on an Internet site gives you a good review, make sure to save a copy of that review to your own computer. The below message will explain why. Suffice to say, I didn't save a copy of the review referred to, and I later regretted not doing so. Suffice to say, I've backed it up now, and perhaps the rest of you can learn from my original mistake...

Here's the message...

A few months ago, Tami Brady, a reviewer for Blether.com did a nice write-up of my fantasy novel, Dream of Power, Dream of Glory. Blether, which was Canadian based, has since changed their site. The site owner said the review gig had run its course and they deleted all of their reviews, over 1000 or more. The last time I looked, Blether was doing, I believe, organic farming. Don't quote me on that, as it's been awhile since I checked them out. Anyway, Tami Brady now has her own review site which is kind of very sharp looking, and she's reposted her review of my novel there. It can be seen at

http://tcm-ca.com/romance.html.1.html

I suppose this brings up one of the drawbacks of Internet sites, if they close, you may lose any reviews. (From now on, Terry will start a backup file of any good reviews he receives. I will write that 50 times on the board.) Since Tami Brady brought the review back, it's not lost after all, but again, from now on, I'm backing things up.

All for the moment, Terry, over and out...

Gollum, as per the new emphasis to keep messages from digressing off of main subjects, I will post a reply to your above comments in the free cafe section of the forums.

All for the moment, best wishes, Terry

Congrats on the book!

Yes, save those reviews, for sure. I had a hard drive crash recently....it was ugly. Luckily a lot of the reviewers still had copies.

I have written a fantasy novel, but it's in finnish - would you still be interested in hearing a little more about it here?

Re: Who has a book?

CC,

Yes, and I've been told that I should also back up all such materials, as well as my writing, on either disks or cds. Seems like everyone is going towards cds and dvds. Personally, I still prefer disks simply because I've had a couple of cds that have gotten scratched, but some form of backup is wise.

All for the moment, best wishes, Terry

P.S. Sorry about the crash. Hope you've gotten things back to where you want them.

Re: Who has a book?

Auer,

Since I'm online at the moment... If you mean it's in the Finnish language, yes, I'd like to hear more about it. I'd have to wait for an English translation to come out in order to read the text, but I don't see any reason not to tell people about the book. You never know who might be interested in it.

Best wishes, Terry
