As for Amoka's site, the last I heard there was a some kind problem with the the person who was maintaining the site being no longer available. Amoka was going to move it to a new host. The link stopped working shortly after that - maybe a year ago.

It also looks close to how I imagined Arya - but when using reference material you should try to deviate from the original work somewhat; in this case it resembles it a bit too much for my tastes. Great job overall, however, and definitely keep it up.

I have to say, that I've searched every GRRM site I could think of,(not a google geek or anything... so...)and not a single artist still has yet rendered the exact image of Arya. She is young, yes, but her face is definitely longer, with more of a heart shaped (indeed, some do call it 'horseface') around the upper portion of her face. Take just a little weight off of her, as later in the story, and her cheekbones could cut paper they're so sharply defined. I know her image well, as I was her at nine and further into early adulthood, so I can say that regardless of excellent attempts, none can carry her portrait accurately. Before she cuts her hair, it is long yes, as we've seen, but even with it cut extremely short, her predominate elongated face and wide cheekbones would be much more than any artist's sketch that I've thusfar seen. Yes, this is a challenge to anyone with artistic ability, as I personally have none, to create the PROPER image of Arya. Having said all that, this image of Arya is the best I've seen, but in my own mind's eye, I see a completely different person...

I love it. I know she's quite young but I always imagine her as being older when reading for some reason. I guess it's because she does so much that you wouldn't think someone her age would do.

I think everything is art as long as you enjoy it and there is other people who enjoy it too. Besides I loved that girl in a reference and really wanted to draw her as Arya so... I liked this pic best of all, but she is drawn with a face that is almost elf-like... or something. It just struck me that it does not look like a real girl. I love her with the sword in hand though, and the very determined expression.

I'm not sure you took my critique the way I intended it. Any artist who claims artwork created using a reference image is not art should be doing something else with their time. As artists everything we do comes from reference in some way shape or form, even those things we manifest from our imaginations. And as far as digital painting is concerned, though some traditionalists will snobbishly disagree, there is no doubt that it takes talent and technical ability to produce quality artwork with a computer - you have to be dedicated to relearning the habits and methodologies you learned through traditional mediums and you will not create convincing work unless you have some semblance of talent.

I'm an artist myself; I worked in the professional market for quite some time and my preferred method for painting is using a Wacom with Photoshop, Painter and Open Canvas.

So if you felt that I was trying to belittle you, rest assured that was not my intention. I am both a firm believer in using reference as well as an avid digital artist. What I was trying to say was that you should deviate from the original image as much as you feel comfortable (with your particular skill level) since it forces you both to be more creative and establishes your piece as being its own work, and not too-close copy of the source image.

Here's an example from my own gallery, where I used a photo to create another image -

In the first I retained the integrity of the original image, keeping some of the lighting information and the pose the same, but the result is drastically different than the original. With the Warlock there is no similarities to the original piece save the proportions of the arm holding the staff and the tilt of the head.

Has anyone read His Dark Materials? Arya is pretty much the same character as Lyra, don't you think?
