Totally agree. Kenny G is one jive mofo.

Wow. What are you smoking, and where do I find it?

Re: Jazz

actually I came in this world wired this way it seems. I've never even been drunk once in 35 years but I hear a sleepless night does about the same thing.

Re: Jazz

Never drank? Or just never been drunk?

Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle (whiskey. Gotta start strong) and go at it. Being drunk is miles away from missing a nights sleep. When your'e drunk your'e fantastic. You feel good. Confident. Handsome. Charming. Are you actually any of these things to someone who is sober? No. But you believe you are. Drinking is like a sort of magic trick you perform on yourself. The hard part is perpetuating the illusion.

Don't let people tell you it isn't a sure fire way to get rid of your problems.Theyr'e wrong as hell. As long as you can stay drunk your problems will leave you alone.

Re: Jazz

it just brightens up my day to hear people condoning getting drunk.

i dont think you need to get drunk to enjoy yourself, i mean, a drink suffices.

anyway, lets get back to the whole jazz thing.

i play clarinet, and i feel they are totally unappreciated in the jazz scene, i mean, the saxophone takes centre-stage everytime, even in blues, which is one of the more notable genres of clarinet-playing.

i love playing jazz, and i know there are lots of famous jazz clarinetists, but why should they be constantly overshadowed by the saxophone?
...even if it is shinier.

long live the clarinet!

Re: Jazz

I think Ozymandias is having a little tongue in cheek fun. I've had a social glass of wine or champagne here and there but, no, never drunk. I don't mind reading about other people’s experiences with mind-altering substances, it's just not for me. Clearly if I've gone 35 years without it then it's not something I need.

I like the Clarinet too. I recently got my first turn table in years and I got an old Benny Goodman record and it kicks. I also like Clarinet and Flute in old Calypso Recordings from artists like Roaring Lion. There's even a nice Clarinet solo on Van Halen's Diver Down album on the song Big Bad Bill. I think the public often makes associations with instruments that are limiting. The basic Rock band Setup has stayed pretty much the same for decades now. You know I've played the steel drums for years (sadly not much time for it lately) and lots of people thinks that steel drums are only for happy "cruise ship" music but I can play spooky haunting melodies as well as melancholy Brazilian songs. Armenian scales sound especially nice on my set and . . . I'm about to go on a steel drum rant again. There was a time when it was all I could talk about Gershwin knew the power of the clarinet. Lets have a steel drum/clarinet jam Putaway. One of these days if I start playing again I'll post an mp3. Oh I also play Baritone Ukulele that would go well with Clarinet also.

Re: Jazz

Drink and drugs are never something you need (unless you're addicted), they're just something you do for fun. Like watching a movie or going to a jazz club. Whatever floats your boat.

Sorry, I know nowt about jazz, I'm just browsing out of boredom and stumbled into this discussion Go jazz!

Re: Jazz

Please don't take take my rather stupid comments to mean I condone anyone becoming a drunkard. I was being tongue and cheek. It's not fun at all being a drunkard. It's a sad and pathetic existence.

I've been away on Jim Beam black label these past few weeks (?).
Nothing but trouble. Don't drink. I lost my girlfriend, my diginity, and my self respect.

Don't drink.

Re: Jazz

Love the clarinet. Love Goodman. That's jazz right? Or is it swing? Like it either way.

yay that would be super! unfortunately, i tend to play more classical stuff, mozart in particular, but only because its what my clarinet tuition teacher gives me. I have the sheet music for It Don't Mean A Thing somewhere in my tip of a room. oooh and the pink panther theme tune, irrelevant, but catchy

Re: Jazz

Love jazz. Don't know if anyone out there is old enough to remember the 2 jazz boats in the '60s that used to sail from London Docks to Brighton and back on one day in the summer. There were many of the favourite bands of the day, covering all types of jazz and one could wander from deck to deck listening to them; then, after a few hours in Brighton, travel back to London Docks on the the other boat. Heavenly day out.

My favourite type of jazz is the blues - then I can unwind listening to either vocal or instrumental (piano being favourite). One of the oldest recordings I have is from an original Bix Beiderbecke collection. Another oldie is Stephane Grappelli. I also like the work of the more modern Jamie Cullum
