Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

So you mean, I gave my synposis to you when I posted it here. I have no more controll over it here.

PS. One good moderator said that they will not help, because that is not their area, I need to wait for the right moderator.

Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

You did not give it over but you don't have the right to remove it. You still have control over its rights for instance someone can't just copy and it call it their own. On the other hand you can't claim foul and force the critique forum to remove it. If you were so paranoid about your idea then you should not have posted it on the internet or at least been more careful and read the forum's rule that clearly state to read before posting.

One thing I should note as I was reading the critique section rules the moderators have no ability to remove or edit those posts as to insure that the work remains what the poster wanted it to be. So you may have to talk to someone higher then a moderator if you wish to get anything removed but again such action is not guaranteed.

Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

I've not received any requests, though JD Worthington I believe did, but he's not able to moderate in the aspiring writers section anyway.

As for the overall requests - the edit function ceases to work after around 15-20 minutes. It gives enough time to correct typos, while also allowing posts to remain constant enough to be replied to.

The edit function needs a cut off, because I've seen people elsewhere abuse this function to rewrite posts in order to change the meaning of entire threads, usually to disadvantage other members.

As Culwich points out, the issue of covering removal of material is covered in the Terms of Use and in the announcement on the Critiques board.

The reason is simple.

The staff here are all volunteers, and if the removal process were left unchecked, I assure you we would have people everyday asking for material to be removed, and expecting chronicles staff to do this for them, which simply isn't fair on the staff.

Therefore we try and encourage people to be responsible with how they post in the first place.

If anyone's worried about potential plagiarism issues - firstly, it's extraordinarily difficult to come up with new concepts that haven't already been published in fiction in already. Secondly, it's extraordinarily difficult to become a traditional published writer, and different writers will always treat the same subject matter differently.

So overall, I really don't think people have to worry about outright plagiarism, because I think the reality is that it's unlikely to happen here.

Of course, no one should be posting full works on chronicles unless they accept that others may repost it without authorisation - but again, that's why we try to encourage responsible posting by asking that only excerpts be posted - which is usually more than sufficient for any feedback and critique.

Hope that helps.

Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

Yeah the info supplied above helps me a lot.

Not being able to edit or delete posts that a forum member has put up is just plain out of order.
I've never been on a forum where individual posters cannot edit their own posts after a short time allowance.
It's almost unheard of..and I'm a lot of different forums.

Quite frankly...it SUX.

But Chronicles isn't like other forums, and we aim to keep it that way.

Being an experienced user of message boards, going back to the days of BBS, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you. The norm is quite the opposite; most users are either unable to edit their posts, in any way, or are able to edit their posts for a short amount of time after posting (which this forum does do) -- after which point the ability is lost (and for good reason).

Any forum which allows its users/moderators such power will quickly grow out of control. The systems of checks and balances will fail and, eventually, you'll end up losing both your users and your staff.

I'm laughing out loud here.

Anyone like myself who is on many different forums will know that what you are saying is completely incorrect.
There are even forums out there that have no moderators or moderation at all.
Shocking for those of you who need to be in control I know.

Here's a nice example for you: Adventure Rider Motorcycle Forum
I've been a member of this adventure/exploration motorcycle site for some time. Posters have always been able to edit and delete their own posts, because the Admin realises that we're all adults.
We've only got a couple of members, who have hardly made any posts at all though...

We, on the other hand, are a family friendly forum, and have members of all ages. Our rules reflect that.

Perhaps this would be a good time to remind everyone that personal remarks of a disrespectful nature are not in the spirit of those rules or this forum.

Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

I've decided I'll just go back to the foum I'm an Administrator on and see if I can't do some heavy handing modding myself.
It obviously holds some kind of perverse attraction?

If Brian could delete every post I've made here and close my account completly that would be a good thing.

Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

That was really random.

What an odd thing to lose the plot over..

And for the record, every major forum that I'm a member of works on the same system as here of only being able to edit within a short window of time. Some of the smaller ones I frequent that have, say, 30 members might work differently, but there's an obvious distinction there.

It may be too little too late here, but it's possible the internet you dial into and the one that I do are on different switchboards.

Re: help needed with posts- not possible to edit

As an aside, can I mention that I've never seen a list of moderators on any page?

I'm not saying they're not there, just that I've never been able to find them.

(Not that I've ever had to contact a moderator "on business"; and I hope I never will.)

On the main forum page (the one that lists all the sections.) At the bottom, but above the list of folks on line, there is a link called "View Forum Leaders." Click on it and it will show you who is what...
