Re: Otherland

I loved Otherland. It's appeal for me was that it is so unique. Very rarely has an author created something which is so...ambiguous. The virtue of Otherland is not that it has some over-arcing epic story or is a journey through the soul of humanity(well it is in some ways), but that it brings to light the very thin veil between the real and the unreal. Which in our world is getting thinner and thinner all the time. I liked it.

Re: Otherland

I liked Otherland, but William's Fantasy is better.

I have to agree wth that. He just seems much more at home with fantasy.

Re: Otherland

He has stated that personally he liked Otherland the best because it represents himself in some ways. Ironic, no?

The significance of Otherland is not its face-value like so much fantasy, but the symbols and motifs within the work.

Re: Otherland

I never got through Otherland, but I remember being quite enthralled by it. It was very detailed and engaging. Definately on my to-read list, though I am curious to see what Tad's fantasy has to offer

I didn't read this series but love your summation.

Where were you with the cliff notes when I was writing reports for my high school english lit class?

I especially like the emotion evoked at the end of your summation.

Oh, please. Don't remind me of these books!

Massive spoiler for anyone who hasn't read them:

It was all a ******* dream. No, seriously.

Re: Otherland

Otherworld, for me, is a very good series, and very looooonnnnggg. I read them all over a year. During that time in real time, several gamers died, or became very ill, while hooked into a game. I also stay with a lot of the research using pc hook ups for people such a Hawkins, and others using prostheses. Fantastic stuff. These books surely indicate one direction that the pc-individual hook ups can go, in a bad way.

I've checked a couple of Williams' fantasy books, and don't like them nearly as well as I did Otherworld.
