Raven/fledgling - Science Fiction Fantasy Chronicles: forums

I read this sci-fi book about a free lance detective a few years ago.

The story switches back and forth between the detectives youth in chapters headed Fledgling and and his present in chapters headed Raven but I just can't remember the title

.

Would love to hear if anyone can remember on my behalf as I wouldn't mind having another read.

I had that on my shelf till last week (when I sent it home), cannot be 100% certain therefore but I think it is:

The Octagonal Raven by L.E. Modesitt Jr.
