Looking for a book - Science Fiction Fantasy Chronicles: forums

Hi i am looking for a book that had been read out to the class when i was in school (1997). I cant remember too much but i'm sure it starts on the main characters birthday, coming down the stairs of his house with outside covered in snow.
He is given a ring not for a finger but it is big enough to slip onto his belt, and it heats up, i think depending if there is danger or something dangerous near by. there are more than one of these rings and i think it is made or iron or copper.
A little later in the book he is in the room only lit by candles and a bigger fire. another person is in there too and explains he is the last in line of (something) and tries to teach the main character to extingiush one of the candles with his mind, but instead goes for the big fire, there other person i think becomes slightly nervous scared and explains something about shadows or something.

I cant remember and some may be slightly wrong but i hope this is enough.

It sounds like The Dark is Rising, by Susan Cooper.

Rot ! you got there first TE, think you're right, though. Just don't see the film Gaji. The other person is Merriman Lyon (actually Merlin.)

Yep, definitely The Dark is Rising (which is book two in the sequence, BTW, which runs: Over Sea Under Stone, The Dark is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King, Silver on the Tree).

Oh, and Ace is right - stay away from the forthcoming film. It's going to stink!

Yeah it has to be The Dark is Rising. I've only read it once and as I was reading the first post I was thinking "I know it, I know it, it's on the tip of my tongue..." then I scrolled down and there was the answer! lol *sigh* i'm such a noob sometimes...

That's actually the second book of the 5-parter - starts with "Over Sea, Under Stone", then "The Dark is Rising", "Greenwitch", "The Grey King" then "Silver on the Tree".
