I was taught the following rule:
"I before E except after C, when the sound of the diphthong is ee"
and then was told that rules in English almost always have exceptions.

As for names, the rule is to spell them correctly ().

It could perhaps be thta he himself pronounced his name Tol-keen rtaher htan tol-kin- could it not?
Or possibly just a lot of typos.
