Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) I have the same problem with Jaxom as devilsgrin has with F'lar. I admit F'lar is annoying a lot of the time, but Jaxom is annoying all the time. For me, the only redeeming thing about TWD is Ruth, he's my favorite dragon.

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) Aw, poor Jaxy! He's not that bad - at least, not compared to Piemur, my least favourite character... But I agree with you about Ruth - I'd love a Ruth of my own... ![]()

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) Perhaps we should start a thread for characters we don't like! ![]() ![]() On the subject, though, I was never fond of Mirrim myself. I don't know why.

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) Mirrim was slightly annoying, mainly because she reminded me a lot of myself as a teen when I no longer wanted to be reminded of it. However, Brekke is unbearable. A total doormat who never should have impressed because she was unable to get over her sexual hangups. Brekke killed her dragon, Kylara and Prideth were just incidentals. Lessa would never have let a similar situation get that far.

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) I think mine has to be Dragonsdawn. It was the first McCaffrey book I read and got me started on the Dragonriders series, which I love. Then I went back and read the series in order. I also enjoyed the Masterharper of Pern, Robinton was one of my favorite characters. I also enjoyed The White Dragon, gotta love Ruth! It's been awhile since I've read them though, so I'm sure I'm forgetting one, or two, or all of them. The only other series of hers I have read is Petaybee. I did enjoy that as well, though Dragonriders are my favorite.

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) The aspect of the Pern books I enjoyed the most was the sort of "science-fantasy" crossover -- specifically, the rediscovery of lost technology by a pseudo-medieval culture. So I think All the Weyrs of Pern would be my favorite, because that's the book that focuses most on the re-learning of technology. Also, AIVAS is just a great, great character. The fact that it's got a sort of dry sense of humor is just priceless. Having said all that, I also really like some of the earlier books, where the lost history is sort of hinted at, and the truth about the southern continent is gradually revealed. And to further muddle things, there's something really appealing about Dragonflight, simply because it's the first Pern novel McCaffrey wrote, and everything's a little less developed; a little more.... raw, maybe?

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) I agree with you there, Durandal - it was much more fun when they were slowly re-discovering things, than after AIVAS practically handed them all they'd lost on a plate.

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) AMC herself admitted that in reality it would take a lot longer than some four years to change the level of technology enough to enable them to move the Red Star. I did enjoy the rediscovery of technology, although AIVAS is the best example of deus ex machina I've ever read (literally god from the machine).

Re: Which is your favourite book? (Any series) Oh, absolutely. I did feel that the whole post-AIVAS rediscovery of technology was rushed. But I still really liked AIVAS, and the earlier stages of the rediscovery are among my favorite events in the entire Pern saga.
