Post Ingmar Bergman AND Michelangelo Antonioni RIP

Bergman dies at 89

Can't say I'm heartbroken because he passed away at the end of a long and very fruitful career, making some of the greatest movies that I have seen and he had retired from active film-making a long while ago. He also had 5 marriages and 8 kids, which must have got tiresome after a while.

Woody Allen said it best at Bergman's 70th birthday "probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera".

Amen to that.

Re: Ingmar Bergman RIP

Even though he's not made a film in a good while (the last I see listed is Saraband for 2003), he was a superb filmmaker.

Here's to a long and wonderful career that produced visions and dreams for so many....

Re: Ingmar Bergman RIP

He was one of those giants on whose shoulders the film makers of today stood on.

Well, July 30th seems to have been the day for renowned masters of European cinema to pass away.

As I said in another thread: Damn. Again.

It does, doesn't it? And who do we have to replace them... or even be on the same level....?

That's a double blow to the film industry - two legends gone. Still, what a legacy they've left behind.

Re: Ingmar Bergman AND Michelangelo Antonioni RIP

wow. this is quite disheartening. however, they both had incredibly fruitful careers and as nesa said they are two of the most influential filmmakers ever. it might be considered a loss to the entertainment industries in some ways, but they both weren't really making movies at this point--both achieved all the greatness they needed quite early on in their careers. RIP.
