Re: Film vs. Book: Battles

I was really pissed off at the potrayal of the Battle of the Hornburg in TT. It was over way too short (filled with useless stuff like Legolas skateboarding and people standing around) and I hate how it would just suddenly to some other scene from a completely different part of the novel. I would have loved to see some horse action at the Dike and the battle made into an actual battle, not just a bunch of idiots fighting a bigger bunch of idiots.

Re: Film vs. Book: Battles

To be honest the battle scenes in the film, although technically very well done, bored me quite frankly. Too many silly stunts that took the drama right out of the moment. Examples such as Legloas using a a shield as skateboard, Aragorn "drawf-tossing" Gimly at the Main gate of HD; Legolas again climbing up, over and jumping off the tusk of that oliphant etc. Plain silly really

Why? It adds nothing to the result of the battle, annoys the purists, and flies completely in the face of common sense: in order to get there on time, they'd have had to have left Rivendell at least 10 days beforehand - when the still unbroken Fellowship were still floating down the river from Lorien!

you are right but elves are pretty cool so he just had to put them in more fighting

Apart from they came from Lorien?

I didn't like that they added the elves, but Peter Jackson said he wanted to make the them a little more involved. I thought the point was the elves were fading and not involving themselves.

I thought Helms deep wasnt't too bad. Although I can see why they did what they did with Eomer ( rather than add another character with Erkenbarnd) I missed him in the battle And too much gimmickry not enough 'have at you!' lol

Pelennor was a pretty awesome spectatcle ( odd how the rohirrim said they only had a few thousand men, yet when they turned up it looked more like twenty thousand lol) But the Legolas / Mumakil was too much.

Consider Hollywood's version of medieval England (eg Errol Flynn / Kevin Costner as Robin Hood) I think LOTR got off pretty lightly
