Talking Is this new series good?

Is it comparable with the older series? I've watched every TND and most of the TOS and DS9, but I don't know if it's worth buying any seasons of Voyager of Enterprise.

Re: Is this new series good?

Voyager and Enterprise are hardly "new" series, though they may be to you.

Personally, I think neither are as good as TOS, TNG and DS9, but many people rate Voyager as their favourite.

I think Voyager was a string of missed opportunites - a crew of conflicting personalities and ideologies that was watered down until they became just another Star Trek crew - the greatest Star Trek alien villains, the Borg, watered down until they became tame pets - the first cgi aliens with psychic powers that were never used - Kes, a crewmember with psychic powers that were never used.

The writers made big mistakes too - the ship never suffered any damage that could not be repaired - the Ocampa only give birth once a life (7 years) but somehow still repopulate their planet - Janeway uses a 1980's PC. Little things, but sloppy mistakes.

Most fans derided Enterprise and it was eventually cancelled. Personally, I think that is a shame, because after the huge mistake it was to make a prequel anyway, and after a poor start, I was beginning to like it and I thought the third series was really going somewhere.

Re: Is this new series good?

A lot of people who like Star Trek are fascinated by the Borg. This is why many people rate Voyager as their favorite. However, with the ease the Voyager crew defeats the Borg and the introduction of Species 8472, the Borg loses much of the mystery surrounding them in TNG.

Also, as Dave said, there are many many continuity errors including the number of torpedoes available (Voyager used five times the number of photon torpedoes they had), how easily a Borg cube can destroy a starship like voyager, etc.

Voyager was unique in that it introduced a large amount of nonhumanoid aliens. Seeing aliens that look exactly like humans except for little markings on their face got a little boring for me.

Re: Is this new series good?

I'm still new to Enterprise but I feel the series "woke up" at the end of season 3 and I am very drawn into season three so far. The main reason is it became a little less episodic typical star trek. I hope they continue with arc story telling instead of episode that I feel like I've already seen even if I hadn't. I feel like Voyager took more seasons than usual to wake up. By wake up I guess I mean that the show hits it stride and finds itself and starts telling new and engaging stories. With enterprise I started reading the synopsis and skiping episodes through season 1 and 2 but I don't think I'll want to miss any season 3 episodes. I'm starting to feel the tragedy of it being canceled.

I agree. Both TNG and DS9 seems to wake up in Season 3 too (with the introduction of the Borg and the Dominion War respectively.) Their third Seasons then set the pace and style of the rest of the series. To carry on the athletics analogy, Voyager seems to instead have a number of false starts, and in Enterprise the race was just abandoned.

Re: Is this new series good?

Why can't people (producers, fans etc) be more patient these days when it comes to a new series? Enterprise did exactly what TNG and DS9 had done in as much as when season three started, the show really took off. The producers realised that they were on to a winner with the new season arc format but it still needed refining. So they create season four with several three-part episodes which, in my opinion, worked fantastically. Plans for season five were going to build upon this and also introduce Shran as a regular cast member instead of guest star. The last two-parter which featured Trip and T'Pol's baby was meant to be the final episode of season 4 and season 5 would have seen the formation of the Federation. Cancelling Enterprise was a massive missed opportunity. I understand the reasons why it wasn't liked by many people, but it was cancelled because these people were impatient. With shows like Lost, 24 and Heroes which have hit the ground running in season 1, programme makers are pressured into getting it right from the word go which is incredibly difficult. This is what worries me about the future of star trek. If a new series (whenever such a thing materialises) fails to impress from episode 1, will star trek be cancelled forever???

That's a fair concern... Maybe if an when there is a new star trek series it air on the sci-fi channel or a network where instant rating aren't as critical.
