Re: Opinions for Dallows...*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

I got really upset when Hedwig died and had to stop and have a cry when Dobby died. All in all found the whole book emotional but I am a soppy person.

Why not have a happy ending apart from being at Hogwarts Harry had a pretty miserable time of it.....he lost a lot of people around him to keep him safe, it wouldn't be a happy ending if he lost Ron or Hermione.

The bit with Snape was just what I thought....apart from the fact that he loved Lily...should have saw that one coming.

Re: Opinions for Dallows...*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

Overall, I was satisfied. I felt that the middle third could have gone faster with all the running around the friends did. The last quarter went fast and the final revelations did wrap up the overall story arc pretty well.

And she did make pretty sure that no more stories could be written about HP by jumping nineteen years into the future.

The books were well thought out for what she revealed in each book, although she could have condensed the last four books into about half to two-thirds the size to speed up the pacing. (My only big complaint about the books.)

Re: Opinions for Dallows...*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

I got most upset with Mad Eyes death right at the start. He was the last person i would have wanted dead right at the start; i was quite startled!

I also think Hedwig's death was unnecessary, seeing as Harry didn't seem too distressed at her death, or any death in fact

Re: Opinions for Dallows...*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

When is any death actually necessary? And if we're talking about the motivation behind certain deaths in context to the story, who are we to assume they were or were not necessary. From the author's perspective, they were, and any argument ends there. Hedwig's death was obviously quite startling, and impacting, but its purpose was not to serve some definable plot-point or to move the story ahead. It's also not likely that J.K. decided to kill the owl simply to shock us, though some would argue that. If you're a writer, you know how naturally some of these things occur, and often to your own chagrin - frequently a story uses the author as a conduit and you can't help but write what's coming through it, because that's how good stories work; they are discovered, not created.

That's what got to me, though. Snape's love for Lily puts it all into perspective; his resentment of Harry, who lived because she died, his hatred of Voldemort, and his loyalty to Dumbledore, the one person who could avenge her.
It was nice to know that Dumbledore's only error was the ring's curse, which would've killed him anyway.

Re: Opinions for Dallows...*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

I may be going against the grain here, but this book is really starting to bore me now. I haven't finished it yet, still reading -- but that's all I seem to be doing, reading and reading and not getting any closer to the end! And it's the end I just want to reach now, see Voldemort get killed like I know he will, give a little cheer and then finish. Mind you, I haven't really enjoyed the series since the Goblet of Fire and I didn't really expect an ardent love of Harry Potter to be suddenly rekindled in this final book. Oh, I'm not saying I hate it (certainly like it more than the Half Blood Prince) but I'm just finding myself getting bored by it and putting it down more and more often. Anyway, I shall push on and find out how it all ends, mostly because I've been reading these books for nine years now (yup, I read the first one in '98) so to finally give in at the final hurdle wouldn't be the best idea. And perhaps the ending will keep my eyes glued to the page, rushing over the words in my haste and excitement, like the books once did...

Re: has anyone else finished yet?

Just finished.

Liked it, although I thought it dragged a little in the middle. Found the last few chapters enthralling, although the aftermath grated somewhat.

The first two thirds is somewhat slower than the end... most views I've seen seem to agree the end is definitely a climax.

** MOD NOTE **

I've merged 3 separate threads on the HP7 book, so if comments appear to be a little out of sorts - that's why.

If anyone would like a thread about the book without spoilers - open one up and put "NO SPOILERS" in the thread title.

Have fun!

Yes, there did seem to be quite a few Harry Potter threads around...!

Anyway *reluctant grin* The Battle for Hogwarts is certainly quite dramatic. Perhaps I'm enjoying it a little more, now that the jumping around has stopped and it's coming to it's big climax...

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows...*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

First off, you guys are hardcore. 6 hours? I basically shut myself away from TV and the computer for all of Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday so I could read it w/o spoilers. Worth every second.

Now, my thoughts... with obvious spoilers.

When this book is made into a movie, I hope Grint has the acting skills to pull off Ronald Weasley, because I thought Ron finally establishes himself in this book. The part that gripped me the most was when he and Harry were trapped in the Malfoy's basement and Bellatrix was torturing Hermione. Ron's screaming her name over and over, frantically and helplessly, just struck a note with me. Ron was great in the beginning as well, following the advice of the book.

Like others, I would have liked to have known more on what happened to people, other than a scene by the Hogwart's Express 19 years later. Like, win or lose, the trio DID break into a bank. Was there any repercussions for that?

Alternate Ending:

Just my idea of an alternate ending/new beginning. -
The taunting Ron recieved from the pendant before he destroyed it stuck with him. During the battle of Hogwart's, Hermione is slain while protecting Harry. The battle concludes as it did, and over time Harry is remembered as the Hero, marries Ginny, has the family, etc. Ron? Has nothing. As his resentment grows, making him turn mad, he goes and retrieves the Deathstick. He uses it to find the ressurection stone, which he uses to ressurect Hermione. Of course, she is not herself and this drives him even more into insanity. Having had enough of 'hand-me-down' Ron, he makes his play to be the one in charge finally. He kills Harry, who never sees it coming, and takes the Invisibility cloak. Having killed Harry, the Deathstick is now his to command. Others join him (perhaps former Death Eaters), and in control of all 3 Hallows, the next generation has to deal with him. But unlike Voldemort, Ron is family.

Eh. Whatever. I'm just sad to see this end. Great read. Great series. It's finally good that an author writing fantasy greater than a trilogy actually managed to finish.
