Looking for a book, tried Googling but brain not functioning!

A boy, some kind of time/world travel device. At the end, he's talking into a machine which records onto pellets. Random linked memories includes cricket, men in grey robes, and a girl.

Any help at all, please!

It could be the Chrestomanci series,or "Howls moving Castle" the sequel book was Castle in the air.
