Obvious, if you feel like writing, but can't do justice to your book, then write something else. To force yourself to work on it will only have a negative impact on the story.

As for maturity: What is the point of being an adult, if you can't be immature when you want?
I know 6 year olds with the maturity of a judge and 60 year olds with the maturity of a 6 year old

Re: mature or immature?

Seems to me that the door 'sneering' back is more a matter of your own 'voice' rather than a character trait (unless you say "He thought the door just sneered back")

Whether this tells us anything about your maturity as a writer is a different question altogether. (the answer to that is probably no)

I particularly enjoy inserting myself (or reading the author insert themselves) into their writing. This is style. (writing style, I'm not trying to big myself up here) Footnotes, characters interacting with what is written rather than what is happening, asides, commentary I enjoy them all. Probably why Pratchett is my favourite author. (well til 'Thud' anyway and I'm savouring not actually reading his latest (Making Money) until the tension is unbearable)

But voice gives a story a unique pitch (pun) which you can neither practice nor imitate

I like the door sneering back but I'm not certain that it reflects immaturity in your protag.

[quote=daisybee;936606]I think most good fiction has characters that develop as the story does, which inevitably means that most memorable characters start off less mature than they end up.[quote]
totally agree

Re: mature or immature?

It's {quote} {/quote}. You need a / just inside the second set of brackets.

The type of brackets you used are fine, but if I use them in my example, then the computer thinks it's a command and doesn't show them.
