"Empire State Express" -- Son House, on the Newport Folk Festival Best of the Blues 1959-68 set.

Today the university library was giving away tons of LPs and I walked off with about 50 New World and Folkways LPs. I don't have a turntable to play them, but I know someone who does.

Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks - "If You See Her, Say Hello"

The essential Dylan albums: Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Highway 61 Revisited (1965), Blonde on Blonde (1966), and this out of nowhere in 1975. Also, oddly, The Basement Tapes, which was basically recorded in 1967 but not put together for release until... 1975. So it partakes of both moments.

I'd have a tough time picking between Highway 61 Revisited and this for the absolute best. Amazing record.

I think this is more or less the critical consensus. As distinct from "essential," though, might be "personal favorites." For me, for Dylan, those would include the complete Basement Tapes, New Morning, Shot of Love, Good As I Been to You, World Gone Wrong, and "Love and Theft." An oddball selection, I know. If I had to winnow that list down it'd be complete Basement Tapes (a friend gave me five CDs) and "Love and Theft." Which I guess means that "Love and Theft" is my favorite Bob Dylan album. At least, this afternoon.
