Queensryche - Empire

Always a tight band that didn't really follow everyone else, Queensryche visited another realm when they put together this album. Incredible.

Re: Now Playing...

Somehow Jane's Addiction escaped my notice, all these years. Maybe because the Rolling Stone reviews emphasized the queenishness of the frontman. I've got nothing against queens. I find them fairly amusing, mostly; mildly annoying, at worst. I've never been much of a Queen fan, either.

Rolling Stone made the band sound like some alt, "college", shoegazer boring claptrap. If I ever heard a radio track; such impression was confirmed.

HDNet played a 2010 concert of Jane's Addiction, this evening. Their live show was pretty damn good; hard rock extravaganzas. And the singer actually sings well, despite his prancing. My Jane's Addiction experience was enhanced by blasting the sound track out to the patio, while I was BBQ'ing, rather than watching the video.

Ironically, most bands start a concert slow and end on fire. Jane's Addiction rocked it until the bitter end; whereupon they collapsed into exactly the shoegazing that Rolling Stone warned me about, for their grand finale.

Weird; but for the most part I loved it.

Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses - "Summer Breeze"

What made them decide to cover this and how they made it cool I have no idea.

Never read about them in Rolling Stone but I've been a fan since I heard Nothing's Shocking on a friend's tape. (If you like the hard rocking aspect, that's probably still the one to get.) Went back and got the self-titled debut which is nearly as good. Then I personally love Ritual de lo Habitual but you may not, as that's got a pretty rocking first side but my favorite part is most of side two, even though it's slow, long, ethereal sort of stuff. It's just mostly really well done. Then I didn't pay much attention to them after they broke up (for the first of several times), even when the Kettle Whistle recap and Strays new album came out but then I came across a Porno for Pyros CD (with just the vocalist) for a buck and was surprised to like it and ended up getting the other and the two later Jane's CDs. None of it matches the Nothing's Shocking masterpiece but it's all pretty good, with Strays being pretty fast and crunchy at times. Still, all that's probably extra. But the first three albums are pretty essential to me.

I've never seen them live, though. Hardly heard them live: the debut is sort of live and some of the stuff from Kettle Whistle is live and there was maybe a video or something - I bet they would rock live, though. Part of what I like about them is some serious energy their songs have, hard or soft, and that would best come across live.
