Re: Anything Anne

Yeah, we probably are going to have to disagree on this one. Still, Brekke recovered fairly quickly, not like Lytol who had trouble riding a dragon for the rest of his life. Perhaps being HAD helped Brekke recover, especially as she still kept F'nor. At least it probably made it bearable for her to remain at the Weyr. Most people who lose their dragon don't stay, even if they don't go crazy. Brekke wasn't the dominant partner in her flight, unlike Lessa, who stayed, albeit barely, in control thanks to F'lar's exhortations. And even there I found it rather gross that F'lar remained with Lessa and effectively raped her over and over outside of mating flights, until she fell for him. I'm not very PC at the best of times, but that really was rather nasty.

Re: Anything Anne

In Dragonflight and Quest, there was a heading if "might as well have been rape" going on. Mentioned almost in passing between F'lar and Lessa, and described tangently on Dragonquest as F'nor and Brekke's first time together. as far as Brekke's recovery, I think her being able to hear every dragon (especially Canth), her having a Fire-lizard, wanting to be with F'nor (her hold/craft upbringing colored that decision), the attempt by F'lar and Lessa to have her re-Impress, (and lets not forget that it WAS in the script for her to make a recovery) had her able to make a more full recovery. at least full enough to ride Ruth once solo, and take up life in Benden Weyr.

spent some time thinking on the Brekke/Kylara relationship. complete balance there. Kylara: dominating, lustful, responsibility shirking, rank happy, queen rider/Weyrwoman, Brekke: Nurturing, subservient, unassuming, virgin(through manipulation of perceptions for a long time) the one to shoulder all the burdens but permitted none of the authority. together they were a complete Weyrwoman for Southern, then High Reaches Weyr, the Weyr needed them both to function, if there was one or the other then it would not have functioned. when both queens were killed, the Weyr itself only really lost one Weyrwoman. yeah its an over simplification, if Brekke had been able to be in charge she likely would have done well, and might have even asserted herself a bit more... but again the moot point since it never happened.

Ah well. shall we wander down other avenues of Anne's? The talented, Ballybran, maybe even a ship or two? can't really wander too far in within this thread. Limited to McCaffrey here.

okay, noticed another post of yours, and you describing continuity issues in Pern books. I can think of one glaring time issue, thought I had another, but its slipped away. mine's the difference of when Zair was hatched (dragonquest and Dragonsinger have different series of events)

Re: Anything Anne

I think it was Harper Elgion who was killed in one book and yet appeared in a later book, but I'm not quite sure.

Let's not even go into the conflicts between the HHall and the DRoP trilogy and MasterHarper of Pern. The issues are so glaring I'm tempted not to consider MHoP a part of Pern canon at all. After seeing women as craftmasters, Menolly's struggles have all the impact of a strand of wet spaghetti.

Re: Anything Anne

yeah, MHoP has the feel of "she wrote it to placate her publisher who felt the masses had to have it" so lets leave it completely out of the timeline. should have ended it with somebody waking up the day after the funeral with a really bad hangover and the feeling they had a really intense dream about robinton..... thats how movies and TV shows play off the really abd episodes isn't it?

I don't recall Elgion ever being killed off. I do recall a few times her talking about one character and using another's name. ran across that a few times, but also ran across that with multiple authors, so feel its understandable. most of the things I'd really noticed was minor at best. only one I'd mention as major is the change in Aramina especially and somewhat Jayge between Renegades of pern, and Dolphins of pern. both go from adventurous, and slightly rebellious, at the very least leave aside the life their parents and authority figures have for them, run south etc.... then in Dolphins, Aramina is pushing young Readis into a mold of her making, and fighting any attempts made to let him find his own way into life etc.... there's also the hate and contempt she is showing about the dolphins despite the renegades version of them a saving J&A's lives as well as her having heard them speak as well. just didn't hold. especially since I don't think the pernese ever managed to perform lobotomies.

Re: Anything Anne

I think it was actually Oterel that was killed and later resurrected.

Jayru's Rukbat 3 website has a good listing of the major discrepancies, found under "Anomalies" in the menu.

Re: Anything Anne

yeah, that was a fairly comprehensive list, the larth green/brown one is the one I could almost remember. since MHoP contradicted so much of her previous ideas I seem to have blocked most of it out. I do remember her misnaming litoh as monarth, at least they were both bronzes, and both hatched at Benden, ummmm okay, did I hear someone here talk about the queen deaths originating at fort Weyr (instead of high reaches as was described in dragonquest), or was it in all the weyrs of pern? this year has been too long.

Re: Anything Anne

Does she have good books outside Pern?

I read the first book but didnt finished it. I like the riders and their history but now im not sure if her writing is for me.

So i was wondering does she a stand alone book that i might like and then go back to Pern?

Re: Anything Anne

Hmm, a standalone book. I can think of The Crystal Singer - that reads pretty well on it's own, but there are two other books after that if you like it. I'm sure there are others, though - that's just one I'd recommend.

Anything Anne, hm? Echoing what I put in the "what are you reading this February?" thread, I'd personally love to see a book featuring the last threadfall on Pern.

(Sorry for such a late reply/bumping an old thread. Still catching up after being busy for so long before/during Christmas.)

Re: Anything Anne

There is a list somewhere....Aha!
  • Restoree
  • The Coelura
  • An Exchange of Gifts
  • No One Noticed the Cat
  • A Diversity of Dragons
  • Black Horses for the King
  • If Wishes Were Horses
Restoree is the only one I've read, Conn, and so long ago I've completely forgotten the plot....but it led me onto Pern, so it must have something about it.

And if you're still around, Cheryl, you're correct. The mention of Lord Oterel in Dolphins is an error for Lord Ranrel

Re: Anything Anne

Ah, I'd forgotten about some of those, which is odd, as I've actually read Black Horses for the King. If I remember correctly, it was an alternate take on Arthurian legend, and I quite enjoyed it. Albeit, I read it after reading most of the Pern books, though.

Re: Anything Anne

Talysia, I ran across a mention that Anne picked up her pen and paper one more time, and wrote a book about AFTER the last threadfall. though it hasn't been published yet. have had issues getting into the books Todd wrote, so this is under the woo-hoo setting, even though it'll likely be the last book we get with her name on it.

Connavar, most of the Brain and Brawn books are pretty stand alone, The ship who sang, partnership, the ship who searched etc.... The Crystal Singer is alright also. hmmmm...... you might also try Get off the Unicorn..... a number of short stories, some she expanded into larger stories, others are part of the larger universe, but fairly well enclosed. but they can help to give you a feel for the worlds she has created, and not cost so much.

Ran through Dragonsdawn, and was wondering if it was my copy, or WAS there a Jim Keroon for a while? (as opposed to Jim Tillek and Ezra Keroon) the chapter where the two captains and Admiral were having last meeting before Orbit, and descent to surface.

Re: Anything Anne

There's the possibility of a book by Anne after the last fall? This is good news indeed for me! Thanks, Ghost!

I haven't read Dragonsdawn for a while, so I'll have to check on the Jim Keroon thing.

Re: Anything Anne

ran across reference on Dragonriders of Pern and Anne McCaffrey resource site: the Pern Museum & Archives says manuscript was written handed to publisher/editor, and returned for corrections/rewrite (early Feb.)
