Gojira DVD

I recently watched the GOJIRA DVD. It features the original, uncut Japanese version and the English-dubbed GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS, plus some quality extra content.

If you get to watch GOJIRA, the commentary by Steve Rifle and Ed Godziszwski is amazing. Their knowledge of Godzilla history and trivia, along with their references to scenes in the film, is most impressive, even for a hardcore Big G fan of over 40 years like myself.

For example, in the scene where the Odo Island villagers start running into the hills, Rifle and Godziszwski point out that the people are carrying farm implements to use as weapons, to defend their village from Godzilla's further. destruction (they don't yet know what they're up against). Also, they point out that if you look at the village in the background, you can see the trail of Godzilla's gigantic footprints from the previous night's attack. I've watched Godzilla more times than I would care to admit, and had never noticed these details. And, of course, the restored DVD video makes it much easier to see the film's details.

It was 1962 when I first saw GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS. My father told me I had to get up extra early the next day because something special was going to be on the 6 a.m. TV-movie broadcast out of New York City (we lived in New Jersey at the time). Dad made me some good Navy-issue hot chocolate that early morning (he was a sailor), and for the next 90 minutes I was mesmerized by this wonderful Japanese classic. It's one of my fondest recollections of my father, that he introduced me to Big G that Saturday morning so long ago. And I've been a Godzilla fan ever since. Watching the uncut original film 43 years later brought back some happy memories.

Re: Gojira DVD

Yes that version is absolutely wonderful. I bought it on DVD along with all the other Gojira movies made over the years in Japan. I first met Gojira when I was way young. At about the same time I made the acquaintance of Ultraman and both thanks to my mom. And it was a mug of masala milk in my case.

Been hooked on both Gojira and Ultraman ever since and the very first time I went to Tokyo I could just see Gojira looming over the city with Ultraman or Mothra. He's definitely the King of Monsters.
