Salem's Lot

I have just finished this book. I thought it was a great story. Sure it had flaws specially in the begining where he could have been more smooth when he let you get to know the people of the Lot.

Even before things started happening there was this mood i liked. This "nice" small town and that house. When things happened it scared me i wont lie about it. Cause you got to know the people and some you really liked and hoped they would make it but one after one....

He is great at writing the creepy scenes, his prose annoys you something cause it lacks skill but not in those scenes.

Characters i liked most Mark Petrie and Matt Burke. Mark i thought several times, " this kid has balls of steal " First i thought he is a kid he doesnt know how to be really afraid of what was happening but then he took with him a gun and went after Barlow. Hehe what he did to Straker, cool kid.

This was my first true SK book and it made me a fan and if other works are this good or even better than i look forward to reading them.

He is not even close to being one of the best writers i have read but he is a great storyteller!

I have this sitting on my shelf, but haven't read it yet. My sister said it really scared her. I'll have to read it soon.

Re: Salem's Lot

If you liked this you might want to try his Cycle of the Werewolf. Sort of rounds it out I guess. A book on vampires and another with a werewolf.

I like the way King goes about dealing with both. He makes you see the dark underbelly of the people in the town. Makes you see that maybe there is no totally good or evil being just shades of grey; some of which are darker than others.

The other thing to consider was that this book is now over 30 years old and was either the second or third novel by an up and coming author. Some of his prose needed honing but the ideas were wonderful.

Re: Salem's Lot

I know this wasn't written by King, but try it anyway. It is a book called 'Victorian Horror Stories", by Mike Stocks. It's absolutelly brilliant, and there is a story there, 'One Silver Bullet', about werewolves. Trust me, some of the stuff in that book is really freaky; great story-lines and great description. One of my favourites is called 'The Original Revenge'; it's sure to satisfy any sadistic cravings! lol.

Sounds interesting, Carpe. I might give it a try. And welcome to the Chronicles!

Probably the only King book I've started and never actually finished. I found the first chapters infuriating, as he kept introducing new characters/scenes with every new chapter. I think I gave up around Chapter 10.

Re: Salem's Lot

You should try to read it again.

If you are only alittle paitent in the first 100 pages or so and then it gets pretty interesting.

He had to introduce to the many characters cause he wants you to know the little town and its history before the wierd stuff begins.

Re: Salem's Lot

I'm sure you're right, Connavar. I will give it another try. Only problem is that I've got so much on my 'to read' list, I'll probably be retired before I get around to it!

Re: Salem's Lot

I actually read Salem's Lot just after reading Dracula for the first time, by chance. In the intro to the edition I had King wrote that Salem's Lot plays upon a lot of the themes in Dracula (eg the power of modern technology over primeval terrors like Dracula), often subverting them - it was kind of enjoyable to find the links between the two. I recommend reading one with the other in mind.
