Re: The chronicles word counter!

This got lost in the recent shuffle.

Hand of Glory re-write completed, word count dropped to about 100,000. Supernatural story. Submitted last week.

Candlelight first draft, assorted scenes, 10,000 words. Working on re-vamped outline. Fantasy. Stalled at present, just can't get a handle on what point to start this story at.

"The Sun's Got Lost" (working title) detailed outline being worked on. Just plain old fiction. Doing research, serious changes to first outline to get rid of what I feel are typical cliches.

The Taste of Salt (working title) Supernatural linked to Hand of Glory, same characters but not a carry on of story. Rough outline, needs a lot of work/research.

Pearls and Swine (working title) Supernatural linked to Hand of Glory, rough outline, again needs research/work.

Short Story "Death won't be cheated" Horror. 3500 words, submitted to Black Static three weeks ago.

Re-editing of an old epic fantasy novel, written some seven years ago. Need to sort out its sagging middle, and the rough text all the way through.

Also ploughing through old ideas seeing if any can be worked on more.

Do you have any time to eat or sleep?

I love your titles, especially 'The Taste of Salt' and 'Pearls and Swine'.

Re: The chronicles word counter!

Novel: YA, no title
Genre: Fantasy
Word Count: 3,782
am stuck, and may have to drop last 500 words or so to rework it so I can go on

Short Story: YA, The Resolute Guardian
Genre: Fantasy
Word Count:1,638
slow going, but not at a standstill like some

Short Story: Flesh Market
Genre: Steampunk
Word Count: 111
recently been slashed back to beginning for rework - will most lkely end up as flash-fiction

Short Story: No title
Genre: Light/Comedic Horror
Word Count: 1,546
also stuck, but worth continuing as it tickles me

5 good starts, under 250 words each
15 more ideas, notes taken, first sentence written

My issue is finishing anything. I have finished only 7 short stories in the last 5 years, and they were all fairly simple. Does everyone work out the beginning, middle, and end before they start, or do they get a sentence in thier head that won't go away and take it from there?

Re: The chronicles word counter!

I like to start with the single-word or single-sentence idea and usually free-flow with it for short pieces until the ending suggests itself or else I'll force myself to find an ending to aim for. Often the I'll miss and find a better(??) ending by the time I finish. Equally, I've been known to abandon first chapters/paragraphs when a better start presents itself around paragraph 3 or somewhere.

Now, I suppose, I ought to itemise my progress to date ....

Mrs Dale's Dilemma (stupid title) - 5000 words, nearing completion - I know the end, but not how to get there .
An artist's assailant regrets the harm he's done her and tries to make amends without admitting responsibility.

The First Shimmer (Sci Fi) - 8000, correcting a confusing ending.
A failed time-travel experiment brings together two people who know they can never remain together once the failure is corrected.

Waiting In Godalming (SF) - 2000, not happy with much of it, apart from the premise.
Two assassins use a dentist's surgery as a refuge and discover that they aren't as in control of their destinies as they once thought.

I Said (Fantasy??? Speculation???) - 1200
From a workshop idea, what would happen if everyone went deaf?

Pockets (As above) - 1500
Another workshop idea, everyone has to keep their hands in their pockets.

While I've typed "The End" on quite a few of these, I don't yet consider them quite finished
I'm also thinking of submitting some of my Character Creation Chain stuff as flash fiction somewhere .... I never thought I could do flash fiction before coming here

Mrs Dale's Dilemma and the First Shimmer sound really awesome. And Pockets sounds hilarious.

Re: The chronicles word counter!

Here's mine:

Unfinished
Novel: Sentinels of Mith Book I: "Twilight Angel, Remember"
Genre: Dark, epic fantasy.
Word Count: 89,016
Status: Progressing. About 1/3 done. I strive to write at least a page (about 400 words) every day. I don't always achieve this.

Thanks, HJ, but now you've hit my personal weakness - performance anxiety. How can you be sure your story's living up to its log-line
