Re: amazing!!! I know it's bad and all, but I liked the look of the cover of Assassins Apprentice, borrowed it from the library, read it in an evening... and then read the first trilogy all through two years later, when I remembered about it. ![]() Haven't read the other two yet, simply because the library never has either Book 1's in.

Re: amazing!!! Hm you like heroic fantasy or high fantasy? High on magic or low on magic? My fav fantasy writer is David Gemmell. He is know for interesting and flawed human characters. Great prose, world and awesome action. He is the best there is in heroic fantasy if you ask me. If you want epic fantasy with politics, alot characters etc I would recommend Steven Erikson's Malazan series. Starting with Garden's of The Moon. I think he is more similer to Hobb than Gemmell. But if you want great overall story better start with Gemmell and books like Legend or Sword in The Storm(Rigante series). You must read both if you havent read them !!

Re: amazing!!! I was just like you only months ago. Which is why i become a member here So confused about the different types of fantasy. Which writers were good and which wasnt too good. Wikipedia then search for fantasy subgenres So you can see the different type of fantasy there are . Then its easy looking after the writers that are good in the different types. Also there are a huge recommandation thread for fantasy in these forums.

Re: amazing!!! I've just recently started to read many different authors as well. A set in a very different style from Hobb that struck my attention is called Dragonlance. There are many authors that write about this "setting" but the first and best two work together, "Wies and Hickman". If you are interested they have about 15 books and the first one to read is called "dragons of autum twilight". It's an easy read and i hope someone takes it up. Another interesting autrhor is Jennifer Fallon. If you look up a book called "Medalon" then you would be at a good starting point to read her books.

Re: amazing!!! Ok, this is gonna be long, cause I like writing a little too much but I am also too tired to go edit this and make it smaller. I got into Hobb because a girl I met at the school I had just moved to asked what books I liked, since I was always reading, and she told me about Hobb. Since all fantasy is different, I’d say just go try different ones and see what you like . . . Off the top of my head, authors I would recommend would be . . . Tamora Pierce, even though she's VERY different from Hobb, those books can be just fine for a younger audience but I don't think that's a bad thing at all. Her books are pretty much the first fantasy that I really fell in love with when I was in middle school so I think I'll always be attached :-) ). If you read any of hers I’d start with “The Song of the Lioness” series even though my favorite quartet is the one after that, “The Immortals”. Her books are well known for focusing on “sheroes” which are strong leading females. I also love Phillip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy, which has a lot less action than Hobb and more complex of a storyline, with parallel universes and the idea of original sin, etc. Half of my handle – the “Lyra” half – is from these books. I also really really like Cecilia Dart-Thornton’s "The Bitterbynde Trilogy”, and Kate Forsyth’s “The Witches of Eileanan” series, which has like 6 books in it or something. Then there is Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern, those are popular and there are so many of them I'm sure you could find one of her books with no trouble and you don't really have to read them in any sort of order, I don't. Oh, and just a few months ago I read Jonathan Strouds “The Bartimaeus Trilogy” and really enjoyed it. Then you can always go read some books under Hobbs other name, Megan Lindholm. A couple of those titles are “Harpy’s Flight” and “The Reindeer People.” When she writes under the Lindholm name she writes differently, so it is sort of like reading from two completely different authors. Anyways. I tried to pick a variety of fantasy authors/series/trilogies, that way you can experiment if you want to see what you like/don’t like. Good luck!

Re: amazing!!! I used to devour books but my reading had been lacking for a time, so I decided to go into the library at school and look for a fantasy book so I saw Assassin's Apprentice, liked the sound of it and read it. I read it kinda slowly and thought it was ok. I really started getting into the books when I read Royal Assassin and then read the rest of the seven books in two months :P

Re: amazing!!! yay another Hobb fan ![]() I got into the books because our library always has a book sale of old or battered books, and Fool's Errand was there, a bit battered, but readable and it attracted my eye, so i bought it for the REALLY expensive price of 30p lol. And from there i never stopped until i'd read all 3 trilogies ![]()
