Re: Short stories? Chris, I've a question: "Timeline"? Are you referring to the story I know as "Life-Line", the one with Hugo Pinero? Or is there a different story with the "Timeline" title I'm not aware of? At any rate, I'd put "Life-Line" in there, even though it was his first published story... that final line ties it all together so beautifully, and says so many things about the ambiguity of what went before. I'd agree with the suggestions above, but I think I'd also add: "The Long Watch" "Solution Unsatisfactory" "Logic of Empire" "'If This Goes On--'" (which hits a little close to home at times)

Re: Short stories? Oops, sorry, life-line, mea culpa. Possibly misfit; as a mathematics natural I remember that one resonating. But I don't know what they're collected in; I read them in astoundings, analogs, the best whatever of the year. (Oh, all right, I've got "the past through tomorrow volume 2" for some of the future history ones. What was his psi/witches short?

Re: Short stories? Well, there was "Waldo", which dealt with something similar; but I would imagine you're talking about "Magic, Inc."... no? Magic, Inc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Re: Short stories? "Year of the Jackpot" is one of my favourites. "By His Bootstraps" is also good. Other comments: In the Future History, Heinlein's prediction of a hard-right religious reaction in America is one of his telling social insights. In Glory Road, Heinlein also predicted that the Baby Boomers would transform from bohemian rebels into comfortable conformists.
