Re: 50 years after he's dead? I didn't find anything disturbing about the whole book.I don't know, it just didn't do it for me at all. It's amazing because I read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon first and hated that too, yet still here I am loving the guy's books.I really can't get enough of them.Strange, but I guess I'm not the only one.

Re: 50 years after he's dead? I also hated The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I think I only got half way through before giving up on it. That's about the only time I've ever not finished a Stephen king novel. Mayhap one day I'll go back and finish it, but it really didn't hold my attention. Even the best can't please all of time, I guess! But as the saying goes, you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time! ![]()

Re: 50 years after he's dead? Dear God man, that book is tiny, you should have just stuck it out. The only book I ever stopped in the middle was this book called The Secret Agent by a guy called Joesph Conrad. If any of you know him then you'll know all about Apocalypse Now and Heart Of Darkness and yada-yada-yada and so on so forth. But seriously, that book made me suicidal. It was like the second Victorian book I tried reading because I had just read Robinson Crusoe which was pure madness. Trust me, for anyone that hasn't read 18th century books, only start if you plan to entertain future insanity. But no, I don't think I could leave a Stephen King book unfinished. It'd seem wrong.

Re: 50 years after he's dead? Man? Heh. And yeah, I know it was short, and usually I do keep going with books even if I'm not entirely enjoying them, but sometimes you have to know when to quit. The Girl who... just really wasn't holding my attention and I didn't even care for the main character. I don't like leaving books unfinished, but with that one I just couldn't find the will to carry on! 18th century books aren't so bad; although Robinson Crusoe goes into unbearable detail at times, overall it's not a bad read. And it's quite a pioneering piece of text as it's often regarded as the first true novel in English. And there are some truly great pre-Victorian and Victorian books out there, books by Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy (he has some fantastically dramatic endings), the Bronte sisters, and plays by Oscar Wilde to name but a small percentage.

Re: 50 years after he's dead? Heh my first book ever was The Count of Monte Cristo and its was such a better read than most books i have read since then. Books like Jane Austen's with her ancient brit english where half of the words no one use anymore thats hard. About leaving SK books unfinished. I did leave Gunslinger unfinished for a week or so. It was so hard reading it cause it was so bad to me most of the times.

Now, if you've ever seen the original text for pieces of work such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, that's old English and that really is incomprehensible! (But the translation is excellent). | |

Re: 50 years after he's dead? I meant the style. Sure you can figure out some of the hard words. But thats like a taking an english test and not a reading a novel. Heh for us that english isnt first language where you learn brit english alittle in school ,Jane Austen's english looks as ancient as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. ![]()
