Jack Williamson

Has anyone here read books by Jack Williamson? Yesterday I finished reading Terraforming Earth by him. I thought it was a pretty good sci-fi book.

I've read Darker Than You Think and enjoyed it. Part of the Masterworks series.

Re: Jack Williamson

The Humanoids was one of my classics revisited. I think it was written late 40's/early 50's, so there is a major sub theme about communism running underneath it. Still, it was a pretty good read and worth the time.

I read that one yesterday, thought it was quite good.

Re: Jack Williamson

What does part of the masterworks series mean really?

That i might find it in a collection with other masterworks?

Here you go, Con.

http://www.sfsite.com/lists/orion01.htm (SF masterworks), and:

http://www.sfsite.com/lists/orion05.htm (Fantasy masterworks).

Try the Legion of Space series if you like Space Opera.

Re: Jack Williamson

Williamson wrote an enormous amount of stuff, which naturally varied somewhat in quality (his first story was published in 1928, and he only died last year), but a fair amount of it was indeed well worth reading. I'd also have to put in my vote for The Humanoids, most especially for "With Folded Hands", which is one of the most chilling stories I've ever read....

Re: Jack Williamson

The Starchild Trilogy (with Frederik Pohl) is excellent. One of my all-time favourites.

I had not realised there was an earlier Humanoids book. I'll have to add it to my "to read" list.

Re: Jack Williamson

Just to clarify: "With Folded Hands" is a section of The Humanoids, which was made up of several stories originally published separately in magazines. There is a sequel, The Humanoid Touch, which I felt was rather disappointing overall... though it's been some time since I read it, and perhaps I'd feel differently now...

Always nice to see Fred Pohl's name cropping up... a writer who isn't really mentioned nearly enough....
