Re: Shout Your Frustrations to the World! (You know you want to.(READ FIRST POST))

Gah to SD cards! I spent an hour snapping photos of our Christmas parade, the first one I'd been to here, and the first one my son was in. And I get a "card unreadable" error!! Gah! So I think the PCs will be able to read it. Nope.

Data recovery programs. Six of them.

Nope.

Card is declaring itself to have 1Gb if I try to format it, but it should have 16Gb, so suspecting the thing has a hardware failure and no software will bring that back. Lost photos.

My own fault I suspect, I did buy a brand I'd never heard of (Transcend, if anyone would like to AVOID the brand) because the price seemed good. Off today to buy a brand I HAVE heard of regardless of the price.

Of course that all pales into insignificance compared to what Mouse faces, and I am hoping we hear good news back from her on a resolution to her problem, which goes well beyond a few lost photos. Hoping all is well, Mouse.

Meantime, did I say don't buy Transcend SD cards?

Sadly, I think you may have fallen foul of a hardware mis-match.

I have a camera which recorded once on a 16 GB card and thereafter refused to recognise anything larger than 4 GB. On checking, I discovered that 16 GB cards were rare enough on the weekend my camera was made. I use the 16GB card now for (mainly) data storage.

On another occasion, an Ultra 2GB card that I bought has been rejected by every working piece of gear that I have apart from the Linux PC.

On that front, my brother helped me greatly to recover "lost" audio data using Linux.

No you didn't, which should save you a few legal costs

Re: Shout Your Frustrations to the World! (You know you want to.(READ FIRST POST))

ever have braces?

more specifically ever have your braces tightened?

I have a tooth ache. but not just any tooth ache, my face feels like some evil orthodontist uped the tension on upper and lower braces by 3 thicknesses of wire.

now its been about ten years since i've had my braces off, but I still remember that mind-numbing ache that pulses through ones head when ones braces are cranked. I assume its the 5-6 root canal needing teeth in my upper jaw and the metal plates in my lower jaw acting up.
but just the fact that all day i have wanted nothing more then to nurse a chocolate shake and hide my throbbing head under a pillow has me more then a little down. its murder to eat anything, but having been starving earlier this year and with no wish to repeat those medical consequences i just, pardon the expression, gritted my teeth and got through it twice today.
laying in bed wishing i could ignore the pain and get some sleep i drifted into an odd fantasy where i was some sort of neolithic woman grinding dryed meat that had been somewhat softened in a broth.
I remember when my jaw was wired shut after surgery and i was shoving contraband food between my teeth for my tongue to chew thinking that someday this skill might save my life (truth be told any time i did something off the beaten path i wonder if some day it might save my life so dont go thinking i'm psychic or anything) and I put one and two together! all i have to do is make food that i can chew with my tongue and i'll be set! those aching teeth will stop throbbing eventually, they usually do. (i've put the root canals off for the better part of 6 years now, last time i saw a dentist, but only for monetary reasons.)

ah yes, one more reason to hate money.

anyway, i wanted to whine to someone and this seemed like as good a place as any to do it, thank you for reading it, you can go be cheerful now

That's not really whining HW. That sort of pain is awful, I know. Try putting a couple of cloves inside your mouth. They really do help deaden the pain. Don't try pure clove oil - it can burn. Hope you feel better soon.

it is whining because it root pain and i cant stuff the cloves into my tooth, i know i tried. so other then go "drug seeking" there isnt much i can do. and being too broke to see a dentist i'm sure as hell too broke to even look for a "dealer" besides i an toying with the idea of getting my pharmacy tech license back and I cant do that if i have had any "drug seeking behavior" swiping narc's is the fastest way out of that line of business forever.

on the up side i thought up a sick villain last night while i couldnt sleep. mad scientist kind of psychologist who pushes their patients to see what the effects of living with long term pain are. the idea that the protagonist goes numb in the soul because his body has been "normalized" to the constant pain he is in was really cool. I might try and jot some of it down today now that i think of it.

Cheers, dude.

The car is heading off to the scrapyard tomorrow. I can claim some of the tax back, but unfortunately the £50 worth of petrol I put in the tank will end up in the hands of the scrappers as I can't syphon it out.

So, I've lost a lot of money. But at least I've already done my Christmas shopping.

I haven't even thought about starting!!!!

And my car threw an injector, sucked something in through the manifold and is economically unrepairable - £3,000ish to rebuild the engine, about what the car is worth!

Ugh! I just got home from the grocery and found that the little mousie that's been inhabiting my basement, and avoiding all of my attempts to capture the little guy via live-traps, has discovered that the house has a kitchen! He, or they, ate into a $16 new bag of rice, and all my couscous.

I don't quite know what to do. It's really good at not getting caught for the last 3 months in my traps!!! I can't just kill the fellow, just for being...

Borrow a good cat; I took mine to the vet's recently for his vac's and the vet assured me he had a nice mouse in his tum; just the right size, apparently. Yeurggh. But effective.

Oh, springs, I wish it was that easy. I have 2 cats, and while they are excellent lap-warmers, the are utterly useless as predators go.

Get metal or glass containers for your staples? But I'm afraid you can kill someone for existing; predation is essential for population balance in rodents (most herbivores, actually. You don't want to see, or smell, the results of other methods.

The trouble with persuading a cat to adopt you temporarily is that most of the methods I know to convince one you're worth hanging around with involve food, and a lack of desire to eat mice. The capture and ultimate slaughter goes on just the same, but then they bring the little corpses to you as presents, or indications of how clever they are – now, where's some more of that shrimp paste?

If you have multiple meeces, action becomes urgent.

Erggg, I know I can't just let the mousies destroy my home, but I so don't want to kill them. Goes along with my vegan ways I suppose. (and my day was slightly irritating before I got home)

springs - yes, do send him Maybe he can at least teach my cats a thing or two.

Chrispy - I always assumed cats brought corpses more as a warning - see what I can do if you step out of line - type of thing.

I think I got lucky - or unlucky, depending on your point of view - mine likes a comfy seat, a bit of food and mice. It's disgusting, he looked at me one night with the tail hanging out of his mouth- STILL MOVING - and then swallowed it.

He was in the garden at the time, thankfully.

Bookstop, I'll hunt the carrier out tonight.

*for all animal lovers, I'm not really going to send the cat to america*

*although he'd probably sleep all the way there, and not notice*

I did have a rat problem, but the dogs have taken to hunting them. There's also a snake that lives out by the barn in the summer. Rat problem gone. I'm not suggesting a snake is the answer to your problem.

I've heard about sonic deterrent devices that plug into the socket and scare rodents away, but I'm not sure if they really work. I also found this online
