Big difference between the UK (which I assume is the same as Ireland) and Oz, over here insurance is voluntary. As long as you have a registered vehicle you have insurance for 3rd party person, not car/property (or is that just WA?) on the bright side it keeps insurance a lot cheaper here, our first car in Ireland cost us about 1/2 of what the insurance did.

In the UK, it's mandatory...Upon conviction you can be fined up to £GB 5,000, get between 6-8 penalty points imposed on your licence (get 12 and it's an automatic ban of up to a year) and the court can impose a discretionary driving ban.

Mind you, they estimate there's about 1 in 20 drivers that don't have any insurance at all :so the idea of it being incorporated into your licence is not a bad idea.
